Landmann Grills XXL Broiler Charcoal BBQ review summary

This is the largest charcoal barbecue on test and it offers some good features, like dual charcoal pans, a warming rack and a smoker, but the poor quality of materials means you might have to cope with badly machined parts, which make it tricky to assemble.

It’s also quite expensive, so while it cooks well and is a sensible option for a large family, you might prefer something more sturdy and well-made.

First impressions of the Landmann Grills XXL Broiler Charcoal BBQ

Given its size, we think it’s better suited to a medium to large garden, as opposed to a courtyard. There’s an impressive range of features, including a built-in thermometer, durable cast-iron grill, stainless-steel warming rack, two charcoal doors and two adjustable charcoal perforated pans, which you can raise or lower depending on whether you want to sear or slow-cook food. We particularly like that these individual pans also mean you can cook food differently at the same time. It also has a pair of practical side tables, is mounted on a trolley so it can be moved around the garden, and has sturdy wheels, which lock into place. However, elements of the barbecue are made using inferior materials, which lets it down.

How easy is the Landmann Grills XXL Broiler Charcoal BBQ to assemble?

The instructional diagram is easy to follow and the screws are clearly labelled. Sadly, parts of the barbecue aren’t well machined, which meant we found assembling certain parts difficult – on test, one of the smoker handles wouldn’t screw in at all.

How easy is the Landmann Grills XXL Broiler Charcoal BBQ to use?

The Landmann efficiently heats up in around 25 minutes, if you’re using the whole grill you’ll need two bags of 13kg charcoal. It evenly distributes heat, and although we could only use one side to adjust the level of the charcoal because we couldn’t attach the handle, it worked well. The temperature dial is responsive, although it doesn’t indicate heat zones and only shows Celsius and not Fahrenheit. There’s also a tray to collect ash but there’s no handle, which feels like a safety issue. However, there’s ample cooking space with a double-width grill that gives plenty of capacity for 12 people. It’s a comfortable height to cook on, although shorter users may find they need to lean across to get to the back warming rack.

Cooking results

On test, the kebabs cooked evenly but the halloumi did begin to stick to the grill, while the potato slices cooked through without burning. The cast-iron grills sealed the courgette slices and created nicely defined grill lines on all the ingredients, including the toasted buns. The second warming rack is useful for placing cooked food, too.

How sustainable is the Landmann Grills XXL Broiler Charcoal BBQ?

It came with lots of plastic and polystyrene, which was frustrating. However, while some of the parts were flimsy and badly made, it does come with a five-year warranty.

Conclusion

From a size point of view, this is a good choice for big families. We also liked the smooth rise and fall of the charcoal basket and sturdy folding side tables. That said, it’s quite expensive given the quality and, of course, one of the handles didn’t work.
