Volleyball star Nathan French shares his nutrition tips for training and tells us why he loves kiwi fruit and British pub grub...
What is your typical daily diet when training for a big event?
Five eggs with spinach
Bowl of yogurt, raisins, honey, and oats
Two oranges and two grapefruits - squeezed to juice
A handful of almonds
Two cups of coffee
Baguette with chicken, salami and mozzarella cheese
Bowl of mixed berries with yogurt
Four kiwi fruits
Half an apple
Two chicken fillets in tomato sauce, couscous/rice, broccoli
How do you keep your diet varied and do you ever get bored with eating for your sport?
I don't really get too bored of eating the same four or five meals day in day out. They taste good, fill me up and I know what I am putting in my body. I vary it a little by eating out at a restaurant every so often and treat myself to foods I wouldn't normally cook myself.
What super food/juice/meal helps you get out of bed and motivated on those particularly dreary mornings?
I squeeze two grapefruits and two oranges in the mornings along with my breakfast. I love fresh juice and fruit. There is something very energetic and refreshing about the taste. My favourite fruit is kiwi - it's just a shame they are so small. However, the food that I ensure I incorporate in my morning meal is spinach. It's a very nutritiously dense food with lots to give and really gets me going in the mornings.
What's your trusted snack for an energy boost?
I generally graze on almonds and raisins throughout the day.
How do you stay hydrated when training?
I make a habit of drinking some water on every break or time out I have. Even if I'm not that thirsty. When i'm not hydrated my performance level and concentration levels drop dramatically. When there is a competition I would drink some electrolyte drinks to keep my body on full alert when it's needed most.
When competition season is over what are your favourite food indulgences?
What would be your top diet and exercise tip for the amateur athlete?
Aside from your speciality, what is your favourite sport/exercise?
I love watching the majority of sports to be fair - basketball in particular. I just want to see a game of fast pace and slam-dunks.
