  1. Put the grill on. Heat a little oil in a frying pan. Season both sides of the steaks with salt, then fry for 1-2 minutes on each side. Meanwhile, slice the ciabatta in half lengthways and grill the cut sides until golden.

  2. Drizzle the toasted ciabatta with olive oil, spread the bottom half with the onions and sit the steaks on top. Cover with the watercress and close the sandwich with the other half of the ciabatta. Cut into four sandwiches and serve two per person. Serve hot.

In answer to the above - I think if I were to do this recipe I would buy a jar of 'Very Lazy' caramelised onions from the supermarket. Alternatively, I'd expect a jar caramelized onion chutney to work well in this recipe.

Can anyone tell me if the caramelised onions are made to the same recipe as those in the caramelised onion & feta pizza? If not, how should I do the caramelised onions for this recipe? Thanks all.

hi :) i saw from another website on how too cook caramelised onions so you slice the onions to your choiced size and you add a tablespoon of oil for every onion and you just keep them in the pan and frying them until they turn brownish but the trick is not to let it burn. however i tried another way of adding water and covering the pan and it turned out great and sweet but it didnt have the brownish colour whatever works for you i guess :)
