  • 1 x pack fish pie mix (cod, salmon, smoked haddock etc, weight around 320g-400g depending on pack size)

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 200C/fan 180C /gas mark 6.

  2. Put 1kg potatoes, peeled and halved, in a saucepan and pour over enough water to cover them. Bring to the boil and then simmer until tender.

  3. When cooked, drain thoroughly and mash with a splash of milk and a knob of butter. Season with ground black pepper.

  4. Put 25g butter, 25g plain flour and 4 finely sliced spring onions in another pan and heat gently until the butter has melted, stirring regularly. Cook for 1 -2 mins.

  5. Gradually whisk in 400ml milk using a balloon whisk if you have one. Bring to the boil, stirring to avoid any lumps and sticking at the bottom of the pan. Cook for 3 – 4 minutes until thickened.

  6. Take off the heat and stir in 320g-400g mixed fish, 1 tsp Dijon or English mustard, a small bunch of finely snipped chives, handful of sweetcorn and handful of petits pois. Spoon into an ovenproof dish or 6- 8 ramekins.

  7. Spoon the potato on top and sprinkle with a handful of grated cheddar cheese.

  8. Pop in the oven for 20 - 25 mins or until golden and bubbling at the edges. Alternatively, cover and freeze the pie or mini pies for another time.

A great recipe which can be varied a little if not all ingredients are available and will still be just as good. Tonight, I used dill instead of chives, which won't be missed, as there are spring onions in it. I've added sliced mushrooms instead of the peas and sweetcorn, which I'm serving as an accompanying vegetable.

I really liked this - I don't have a huge freezer, so I halved the quantities, made two pies and the second is in the fridge for tomorrow. I used frozen mashed potato as well - the quantity of potato they suggest seems huge. I love fish pie, but hadn't made it in ages as I remembered it as being time cosuming and complicated - this was super easy. I'd maybe have liked it a touch creamier/wetter, but I will definitely be making it again.

Really tasty pie. Would never have thought to use Dijon mustard, (normally add parsley), but this pie was easy to make will be made again

Great recipe, I didn't use spring onions or Dijon mustard as I didn't have any, but I'm sure it would have been even nicer. I have added prawns cooked in butter. It was delicious and so easy, thanks!

Lovely! I didn’t buy fish mix so used smoked haddock, cod and some smoked salmon flakes. Put it all in without cooking. The 25 mins in the oven did the trick. I’ll use more Dijon next time but that’s my only change!

This is one of my favorite recipes on BBC its really quick and easy. I add prawns to it and left out the sweetcorn, peas, chives and cheese and served in bowls.

I followed this recipe to the letter, although as I had no fish pie mix, I used fishcakes from Iceland. I also replaced the potato with flour and mashed carrots, used lard instead of butter, beetroot instead of the sweetcorn and petit pois. My family don't like mustard, so I used Salad Cream instead. I don't know what chives are so I used sage and onion stuffing mix. I added some honey and maple syrup for sweetness. Unfortunately I had a bit of an accident while pouring the milk and put in a whole pint, so I made the mixture a little less liquidy by topping it off with porridge. As I'm too busy I cooked it all in the same pot (actually a bread tin) and put some cheese slices, like the ones you get on burgers on top instead of the grated cheddar, to save time. I also added some chicken which we had left over from yesterdays roast. Was rushed for time, so I cooked it for ten minutes at twice the temperature. It tasted disgusting and now one of my children is in hospital with food poisoning. I am disappointed with this recipe and won't be coming here again.
