BBC Good Food Easter Taste Awards 2022 – results
Our expert panel of BBC Good Food judges tasted more than 80 products to find the best supermarket hot cross buns, Easter eggs, simnel cakes and Easter desserts available this year.

From snacking on chocolate Easter eggs to hot cross buns for breakfast, the Easter period is packed with treats. Which is why we launched the BBC Good Food Easter Taste Awards 2022, to find the very best supermarket buns, chocolate eggs, Easter desserts and simnel cakes for you to enjoy this April.
We invited 13 supermarkets to submit their best Easter treats across 12 categories. Packaging was completely removed and judges tasted all items blind. Comments and a score out of 10 were submitted for each product in the category via anonymous online judging forms. The entire judging process was overseen by an independent adjudicator.
This year, the team tested more than 80 different products to find favourites in each category. As well as the winners you see here, the Good Food judging panel also awarded ‘highly commended’ status to high-scoring products that deserved recognition. You can find them on the individual Easter eggs results and hot cross buns results pages.
Please note that some of these products are only available to buy in-store and not online.

Best milk chocolate egg
Winner: Waitrose No.1 milk chocolate with champagne truffles Easter egg
Don’t be fooled by the simple design – this rich, creamy and not-too-sweet milk chocolate egg was the best we tasted. The boozy champagne truffles are divisive, so let us know what you think!
Best dark chocolate egg
Winner: Waitrose No.1 dark chocolate with dark chocolate truffles Easter egg
The dark chocolate has a good thickness and tangy notes, with a sharp snap.
Best white chocolate egg
Winner: Waitrose No.1 blonde chocolate with salted caramel truffles Easter egg
For something a bit different, this blonde egg really impresses. The thin chocolate is sweet but not too sickly, with strong caramel notes and a pleasing salty crunch.
Best vegan egg
Joint winner: Aldi Moser Roth Free From salted caramel egg with hidden truffles
For milk chocolate fans, this has a nice hit of salt and added crunch from caramel pieces, plus indulgent truffles.
Joint winner: ASDA Extra Special Free From dark chocolate egg with vanilla flavour truffles
The smooth dark chocolate has a satisfying snap and fruity notes. Plus, the truffles are good quality.
Best children's egg
Winner: Aldi Dairyfine strawberry ice cream egg
We love the brilliantly fun design of this ice cream egg, which has lots of different flavours. The milk chocolate is creamy and thin, while the slightly salted wafer blonde chocolate is especially delicious.
Best miniature eggs
Winner: Waitrose No.1 9 delectable duo eggs
This pretty selection of eggs has grown-up flavours, with luxurious centres and different combinations of crispy praline, smooth caramel and chocolate ganache.

Best classic hot cross buns
Winner: Lidl Deluxe luxury hot cross buns
With a generous amount of plump, juicy raisins and balanced spices, these buns have a crisp crust, but are light and airy. They can also be buttered without falling apart.
Buy in-store at Lidl (£1.19, pack of four)
Best flavoured hot cross buns
Winner: Booths dark chocolate & ginger hot cross buns
These soft buns have a rich dark chocolate flavour. The ginger adds a gentle, warm background note.
Buy in-store at Booths (£1.50, pack of four)
Best gluten-free hot cross buns
Winner: Sainsbury’s Free From fruity hot cross buns
These subtly flavoured gluten-free buns taste much like the classic, so everyone can enjoy them.
Best simnel cake
Winner: Waitrose Easter simnel cake
The thin layer of marzipan on top has a pretty design, decorated with colourful marzipan balls. The sweet, buttery sponge underneath has a good level of spice, clear chunks of cherry and a classic marzipan filling layer for moisture.
The best supermarket Easter desserts, 2022
Joint winner: Tesco Finest hot cross bun bread & butter pudding
A bread and butter pudding done well: lighter than expected, but still rich and eggy, with vanilla-scented custard and a generous grating of nutmeg.
Buy in-store at Tesco (£4)
Joint winner: M&S chocolate & salted caramel dessert egg
This inventive egg is dinky but impressive, with layers of caramel, chocolate mousse and brownie providing plenty of texture without being too sweet. An intensely chocolatey indulgence.
Buy in-store at M&S (£15)
