  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Dry-fry the mince and onion in a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Stir frequently to break up the mince, until well browned. Add the mushrooms and plain flour, followed by the stock and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer, then gently cook for 10 mins.

  2. Meanwhile, to make the cobbles, mix the self-raising flour and thyme together in a bowl. Stir in the yogurt with enough cold water to form a scone-like dough. On a lightly floured surface, roll out to the thickness of about 1.5cm and use a cutter to stamp out 12 x 5cm rounds.

  3. Stir the peas into the mince mixture, then transfer to a baking dish. Randomly place the cobbles on top of the mince, then bake for 20-25 mins, until cobbles are risen and golden brown. This is good served with horseradish sauce.

family didn't enjoy this at all, had no taste and was bland. Not sure if I did something wrong but followed the recipe to the letter? Will not be making again

Was okay, but a bit bland when tasted it while cooking, so tried to rescue it by adding extra Worcester Sauce and tomato puree. If I made it again I would add some more herbs & garlic. On the plus side the dumplings were fab - I made double and added in some grated cheese.

Super tasty, even though the biscuits didn't rise very much. This may replace shepherd's pie in our weekly menu.

Good recipe. My fussy son ate all the meat mixture but not the cobbles. I also had to cook the mushrooms separately (we love them but he hates them!). As a result, this amount only feeds three. I also found that this quantity of dough only makes 8-9 cobbles. Since I expected my son would not eat them, this was not a problem!

A firm family favourite.I used to add a tin of campbells condensed oxtail soup to this but now can only get ordinary oxtail soup.still makes a great addition to taste and consistency. Try it !!

ps Forgot to say, that one of mine was made with quorn mince and the other with beef. Quorn version was tasty ... think the red wine and fish-free worcester sauce added nice taste to it.

Family really enjoyed this. Good old fashioned wholesome grub for a chilly evening! I had a couple of carrots, a parsnip and quarter of a swede that needed using up, so I diced them and added them to the stew mix. I also added a splash of red wine. Very nice ... think I slightly overcooked my scones though as they were a tad crispy, but lovely texture inside and underneath. YUM

Wooah! Amazing! So much better than I thought it would be. Didn't have mushrooms, but decided to experiment and add a can of green lentils, and a mix of beef and mushroom stock. Honestly, don't know if I've eaten anything better!
