Method

  1. First make the Beef with red wine & carrots (see 'Goes well with'). You will need half the finished stew for this recipe.

  2. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Cook the potatoes in boiling, salted water for 10 mins until almost done. Drain well, then mix with the butter and half the Parmesan.

  3. In a large saucepan, fry the pancetta or bacon until golden. Stir in the fresh oregano leaves or dried oregano, then add the beef stew and heat through. Tip into an ovenproof dish and top with the cheesy potatoes, overlapping. Sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan and bake for 20 mins until golden and crisp on top. Serve with a green salad.

Tasty...I left out the pancetta and cooked in a slow cooker before finishing in the oven with the potatoes.

Preferred the original with mash pots and don't see the point in adding bacon and herbs later - might as well do to begin with if going to bother. |A very tasty beef dish !

A very tasty dinner although I did tweek it a bit by using a basic Bolognese and then topping that with the parmesan potatoes.A hit with all the family:-)

Delicious, new favourite beef stew/pie recipe, didn't feel the need to add any extra ingredients (not sure what the Italian bit is all about even an Italian friend was none the wiser) Agree with other user comments. Wish I had made double!

Really delicious! I didn't bother with the bacon and oregano. I layered the potatoes, plain, over the stew, put a few dollops of butter over them, sprayed with some oil and topped with about 30g of Parmesan. I left it in the oven for 30mind to crisp the potatoes more. Will definitely be making this again, really very tasty indeed!

Left out bacon. This was the nicest cottage pie ever! So quick once you have made the stew. Great if you want to make 2 or 3 meals in one go!! Going to make the pasta dish next. How hard can it be to add fresh tomato sauce to the stew. hehe.

I used the cheese potato part of this recipe instead of the usual mashed potato on my shepards pie- was a nice change :) Very simple.

The calories in this are wrong - these calories are the same as those for the basic beef and carrot recipe and as you have added other ingredients they are not correct. The actual calories for this dish is more like 672 kcals, 26.5 g fat per serving.
