  1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Grease and line a 20cm cake tin.

  2. Place the butter, caster sugar, brown sugar, chocolate and golden syrup in the pan and melt gently on a low heat until it is smooth and lump-free.

  3. Remove the pan from the heat.

  4. Break the eggs into the bowl and whisk with the fork until light and frothy. 5 Add the eggs, vanilla extract or essence, flour, baking powder and cocoa powder to the chocolate mixture and mix thoroughly.

  5. Put the mixture into the greased and lined cake tin and place on the middle shelf of the oven. Bake for 25-30 mins.

  6. Remove and allow to cool for 20-30 mins before cutting into wedges and serving.

  7. Serve with cream or ice cream and plenty of fresh fruit.

A brilliant recipe, really easy to make and almost fool proof. The kids love it. I baked it for about 40 minutes and as I have a fan oven put the temp to about 150, it came out just right, crispy on the outside and still a bit gooey on the inside.

This cake is amazing! I followed the recipe almost exactly, I used dark chocolate because I didn't want it to be too sweet and then swapped one tbsp on cocoa for one of drinking chocolate. The cake was perfect, gooey/fudgey in the middle and crunchy on the outside. A definite favourite!

Brilliant!! It's easy to make and it tastes gorgeous, the cake had barely cooled before my family demolished it. Tastes best still warm with some nice ice cream

i have been using this recipe for years and my whole family love them there perfect browines and it would take you to be a pretty bad cook if you cant make these there FOOLPROOF lol my 10 year nephew cooks them all the time aswell so its the whole family who love them!!! there lovely and gooey in the middle the way they should be yum yum thank you for this recipe :D

A nice brownie recipe which the family loved, with a soft centre and a chewy crust. Only trouble is that it doesn't rise very well and becomes quite thin, other than that, a great recipe!

The first time i made this it came out okay-ish a little burnt but tasted amazing. however the second time making this turned into a disaster, whilst baking it bubbled out of the tray ( i think the weighing scales i was using were buggered). However today I shall be attempting to make it with a better set of weighing scales and hopefully it should come out better.
