Agnes Arber rhubarb gin – 41.6% ABV

Overall rating: 4/5

In a nutshell: A super-fruity gin with bold flavours, including grapefruit and tropical notes. Despite the intense flavour, it's versatile enough to serve with mixers.

Buy from Amazon (£40.92), Ginspiration (£32.99) and The Drink Store (£35.59)

This distillery was created and named for botanical historian Agnes Arber, who at age 69 became the first woman to receive the Linnean Gold Medal, awarded in honour of her contributions to botanical science.

More like this

We think she’d approve of the nine botanicals that go into a bottle of Agnes Arber rhubarb gin, from angelica and cassia to coriander, grapefruit, iris, juniper, lemon, liquorice and orange.

Made by infusing the distillery's original gin with tart rhubarb, there's also a dominant grapefruit flavour, both on the nose and the palate. But when served neat, there are also notes of orange peel, lemon sherbet and juniper, with the juicy rhubarb holding its own.

This tropical concoction is very well suited to drinking in the sun, and is refreshing, smooth and overwhelmingly fruity. We enjoyed the big bold flavours, but if you’re looking for something more subtle, perhaps this isn’t the gin for you.

The perfect serve

We found this to be a surprisingly versatile spirit, pairing well with lemonade, ginger ale and even soda water. Garnish with a handful of pomegranate seeds and a slice of orange.
