  1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Boil the potatoes for 10-12 mins or until half-cooked. Drain.

  2. Meanwhile, heat a little oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Brown the mince in 2 batches, breaking up any lumps with the back of a wooden spoon. Tip all the mince back into the pan, add the cinnamon and fry for 1 min. Pour in the tomato sauce and simmer for 5 mins. Slice the potatoes as thinly as you can without breaking the slices.

  3. Layer the mince and potatoes in a 1.5-litre baking dish. Season each layer and finish with a layer of potatoes. Spread the cheese or white sauce on top and bake for 35 mins until golden and the potatoes are tender.

Really tasty quick dish.... did a few adaptions though! Sliced the potatoes before boiling... only took abt 5 mins then strained. Added leeks to the lamb mix with a basic pasta sauce and definitely don't miss out the cinnamon. Layer up as suggested then topped with a tub of creme fraiche with grated cheddar added and topped with feta. Turned out delicious...especially with the feta addition.

The whole family enjoyed this! I made a couple of adjustments - firstly I had leftover roast lamb to use up so this replaced the mince. Secondly I made my tomato sauce and included red onion and red pepper. Really nice basic recipe that can be altered to suit your tastes or what you have in.

I’ve made this several times and the potato is always undercooked. I made it again tonight but after 30 minutes, I took it out of the oven, covered it with foil, turned the heat up to 240 degrees and cooked for another 15 minutes. Seemed to do the trick!

Very good dish for midweek as we work full time. Used jar sauces. Dry fried the lamb mince, no oil needed and added an onion and a few mushrooms, a couple of handfuls of frozen soya mince to bulk it out for 5 adults and keep cost and fat content down. Cinnamon certainly adds to the flavour. No added salt when layering up, fine for me, OH added more salt at the table. Think I'll make one to freeze when I've time but make my own cheese sauce for that as I'm not sure if the pre-made sauce will freeze okay. Also think I'll use this method, but use corned beef with chopped onions, carrots etc and a can of baked beans instead of the lamb sauce to make a sort of corned beef hash bake.

I made this yesterday with some roast lamb leftover from Sunday lunch instead of mince, a tin of chopped tomatoes (added some mixed herbs and a bit of veggie stock cube to it) and made a cheese sauce for the top and I thought it was delicious. I also used some of the leftover roast potatoes, sliced up. Great way to use up leftovers!

We thought this was really nice. I only had a small jar of pasta sauce with Mediterranean veg so used that with half a tin of chopped tomatoes, this worked really well and I would use that again. Missed out the cinnamon and used a good pinch of oregano.
