  1. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the flour, salt and butter into a food processor and pulse until you can’t feel any lumps of butter (or rub in butter with fingers). Pulse in the sugar.

  2. Gently warm the buttermilk (don’t throw away the pot) and vanilla in a microwave or pan. Using your largest bowl, quickly tip in some of the flour mix, followed by some of the buttermilk mix, repeating until everything is in the bowl. Use a knife to quickly mix together to form a dough – don’t over-mix it.

  3. Tip onto a floured surface and lightly bring together with your hands a couple of times. Press out gently to about 4cm thick and stamp out rounds with a 6cm or 7cm cutter. Re-shape trimmings, until all the dough is used. Spread out on a lightly floured baking sheet or two. Add a splash of milk into the buttermilk pot, then use to glaze the top of each scone. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden and well risen.

I love this recipe! So easy to make and absolutely delicious. For variety I've made them with cherries and also sultanas with a touch of cinnamon. The smell that fills the house when these scones are baking is just gorgeous.

Delicious. My carton of buttermilk was only 250ml, but the scones still came out spot on. I just chucked all the dry ingredients in with the wet instead of a bit at a time as instructed and they rose beautifully.

RESULT! I've always steered clear of scones - but these turned our perfectly - even if I did manage to curdle the buttermilk. Next time I'll reduce the sugar a little. Recipe saved.

What a disappointment! Made these after reading all the reviews but my dough looked nothing like dough- it was all sticky and uncuttable once everything was mixed together. Just spooned the mixture in the baking trays. Looks nothing like scones but father in law- who I made these for- loved the taste. Wonder what went wrong?

Too much liquid and therefore a wet dough by the sounds of it. Probably better to add a little at a time rather than all at once and also hold some back as you don't always need the full amount of liquid. Glad they tasted okay though, that's the main thing.

For years I have failed in my attempts to make good scones. Made these today and am very pleased with the results. They were easy too.

This recipe really is excellent. Although I always reduce the caster sugar to 25g, as 85g really tastes far too sugary for my liking. I love using buttermilk in my baking, it's such a great ingredient.
