  • 400g penne (or other tube shape) pasta
  • 250g pack chestnut or button mushrooms, wiped clean
  • 8 rashers streaky bacon



    Bacon is pork that has been cured one of two ways: dry or wet. It can be bought as both rashers…

  • 4 tbsp pesto (fresh from the chiller cabinet if possible)



    Pesto is a generic Italian name for any sauce made by pounding ingredients together.


  • 200ml carton 50% fat crème fraîche
  • handful basil leaves


  1. Cook the pasta in boiling water in a large non-stick saucepan according to pack instructions. Meanwhile, slice the mushrooms and snip the bacon into bite-size pieces with scissors or a sharp knife.

  2. Reserve a few drops of the cooking water in a cup or bowl, then drain the pasta and set aside. Fry the bacon and mushrooms in the same pan until golden, about 5 mins. Keep the heat high so the mushrooms fry in the bacon fat, rather than sweat.

  3. Tip the pasta and reserved water back into the pan and stir over the heat for 1 min. Take the pan off the heat, spoon in the pesto and crème fraîche and most of the basil and stir to combine. Sprinkle with the remaining basil to serve.

made this tonight, used red pesto and didnt add the creme fraiche as shop didnt have any. also added a garlic clove when frying the bacon and mushroom. this was one of the nicest pasta dishes i have had, really enjoyed it and will definitely be making it again

Great with cherry tomatoes too and wholewheat pasta!

Again very quick just make sure you have good bacon otherwise the pesto can be over powering

This recipe is very simple, but not particularly good unless you make your own pesto. But ultimately this dish tastes as simple as it is.

Really easy and tasty. I used red pesto. Even managed to create it on a camping stove on the beach!

This is so easy to do and so tasty. But I think the measurements of bacon and mushrooms are mean for 4 people! Maybe I'm piggy but I like lots of mushrooms!!

I was delighted to see that this recipe could be made dairyfree. HA HA!! Pesto contains parmesan so using it to replace creme fraiche is not going to help. A lovely recipe to make when my daughter is not here, though.

Tasty - took a long time for the bacon and mushrooms to cook together, so will do separately next time.

Made this tonight for tea, quick easy and tasty but quite salty I guess due to the bacon!! Would prob make again, especially If in a hurry.
