  • 100g caster sugar
  • 1 egg

  • 350g icing sugar
  • sprinkles (plus food colouring, if you like)

Method

  1. Pulse together the bread mix and sugar in a food processor or table-top mixer. While the motor is running, add the egg and about 250-300ml lukewarm water, until a soft dough is formed. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth, about 5-10 mins. Leave in an oiled bowl, covered with oiled cling film, in a warm place until doubled in size – about 1 hr.

  2. Knock back dough by squashing with your fist, and divide into 20 even-sized pieces – keep covered with a clean tea towel so they don’t dry out. Shape each into a sausage and place on an oiled baking tray. Cover with oiled cling film and rise until doubled in size again.

  3. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Remove film and cook buns on top shelf for 8-10 mins, until golden. Cool on a wire rack. To decorate, mix icing sugar with a little water until stiff but spreadable – add food colouring, if you like. Dip in the top of each bun and scatter with sprinkles.

Despite using said bread mix the dough is VERY sticky, a lot of extra flour when kneading is necessary. Turned out nice and soft and fluffy though and you can go to town with different icings! :) I cut a slit in mine horizontally and loaded with strawberry and apricot jams as well.

Made these with my nephews and niece (3yr-9yrs). Although the dough was a bit sticky and a fair bit of extra flour got added whilst kneading (which the children did), they turned out fantastic! Will definitely make again.

Made these today with my children. Followed the advice and made using my usual 500g bread machine recipe plus the sugar and egg. It was very wet and hard to work but tastes wonderful. Will never buy shop bought again! Might try with less water to compensate for the egg next time, there will be a next time.

These are so cute and great fun to make with the kids. And as far as naughty treats go this is ways less bad than a muffin!

My grandchildren (and their parents) loved these and they were so easy to make. I didn't use a bread mix, just my usual white bread recipe for my breadmaker. I whisked up the egg and then added water to the 300ml mark and didn't find the dough sticky at all. Sugar was just the right amount to sweeten the buns without making them over sweet. I shall be making these a lot.

these are brilliant! really easy to make and turned out great! only reason they didnt get 5 stars was they were a bit heavier than i expected. i made them in the evening and my little boy had great fun decorating them the next day and he loved eating them to! Will definately make again!

Made these today, used hovis whiite bread mix as that's what I had in. Used fondant icing sugar to make the icing. Buns were lovely and my daughter, who is an iced bun fan, liked them better then the baker's.

I used strong white flour and some sugar, butter and milk. Very sticky, but once kneaded with some extra flour, the dough was managable. I live in a house without central heating, so proving was a bit tricky, but once risen, and baked ... WOW really tasty buns. And I haven't even iced them yet! Kids can do that tomorrow :)
