  • clotted cream and cherry or strawberry jam, to serve


  1. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the flour, ½ tsp salt, bicarb and butter into a bowl and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Mix in the sugar.

  2. Quickly mix in the buttermilk, a splash of milk, vanilla and cherries and bring together to form a soft dough. Press out onto a lightly floured surface, to about 3cm thick. Cut out with 5cm cutters.

  3. Transfer to a lightly floured baking sheet, brush with the remaining milk and bake for 12-15 mins until golden and well risen. Serve with clotted cream and jam.

Ended up with 27, using a 3 cm cutter. Even with a reduced cooking time found them a touch dry, but slathering them in cream and jam solved that!

I've made these twice now and they just got better. Second time, I couldn't get buttermilk so I mixed 1/2 Greek yoghurt with 1/2 milk which worked just as well. I also added an extra tbsp of sugar for extra sweetness. Next time, I'm going to do them with sultanas and a little cinnamon.

could you use other fruit? would they have to be fresh or would frozen berries be ok? newbie baker!

The reviews for these scones are spot on - just made a batch with double cherries and double sugar and have to say they are the best I've ever tasted. Also used a slightly larger cutter and baked for the full time. Even more delicious with cherry jam and clotted cream!

I added 1 beaten egg and 4 tbs spoons of caster suger.these were the biggest scones i have ever baked brill..........

I used half fat creme fraiche instead of buttermilk. They worked beautifully. Might put more cherries in next time though.

Really loved this recipe! Light and fluffy and just the right size! I added extra cherries though! Also a handy hint if you dont have buttermilk you can use 1 tbsp of lemon juice or white vinegar mixed with a cup of milk and leave to sit for 5 minutes, works perfectly! Hope this helps :)

these were so easy to make, took a little longer to cook, but were lovely, hubbie said they were better than his Mums !!!!
