  1. Brown the mince in a non-stick pan for a few mins, then tip into a bowl. Whizz the onions in a food processor until finely chopped (or roughly grate if you don’t have one). Tip into the pan with the oil, then cook for 2-3 mins until soft. Add the spices, cook for 1 min. Return the mince to the pan with the tomatoes and stock, then bring to a boil. Simmer for 20 mins.

  2. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6 and spoon the mince into an ovenproof dish. Arrange the baguette slices over the mince, then bake for 12 mins until the bread is crisp on top.

I adapted the recipe and used 200ml stock, small tin of kidney beans, hot chilli powder and smoked paprika, really tasty and gave it more of a kick.

Made this because the mince was out and couldn't be bothered making a lasagne! I made the American version with Heinz BBQ sauce, additional tomato purée and mushrooms. I chopped the onions with a knife (I don't like graters!) and used all the stock. As I was spooning it into the dish for the oven I was thinking there was far too much stock, but actually it was great over jacket potatoes with cheese. The children loved it, although there were complaints that the bread was 'sloppy' underneath. I will definitely make again but may just use regularly baguettes and not necessarily garlic bread.

Made this for my husbands 'boys night in' and left them to it!! they loved it and had 2nd's! would def do again! made it with the bbq sauce rather than the chilli powder and it was really nice however i will try the original version next time! nice quick meal for the family or 6 hungry men!!!

Excellent comfort food and easy to make. Added baked beans, and a squeeze of tomato and anchovy pastes, for a richer flavour. Will do again

My kids love this. It's dead easy to make. I use BBQ sauce instead and a splash of balsamic vinegar instead of spices. I serve it with rice or spaghetti (as well as garlic bread). Great midweek meal that you can freeze too.

Didn't bother getting my food processor out. Just finely chopped the onions and sauted until soft. Used less stock as suggested and found that this was a great family friendly dish. The garlic bread was a lovely topping rather than potatoes.

Made this with vegetarian mince as I was cooking for a vegetarian. It was lacking flavour, so I added a spoon of bovril, some red wine, garlic and seasoned with salt and pepper. It was ok, nothing special, but I suggest to consider extra seasoning!

Enjoyed this recipe, but I would definitely use less stock than recommended. I used about 400ml and that was a bit too much so I will be using around 300ml next time.

i have made this on many occasions and the whole family love it. it has become a firm family favorite. the amount of stock at first looked like it would be too much but it all soaked into the bread brilliantly.

Agree with everyone, too much stock, so I simmered rapidly for a bit longer. Will definitely make again, but with less stalk and possibly some carrots or something. I also added a bit of extra spice and BBQ sauce for extra flavour. Overall I enjoyed this.

We all loved this and 600mls was right amount of stock too, it cooked down really well and was yum! V. easy and satisfying midweek meal!

already do a similar recipe with left over chilli. i put the bread on top with grated cheddar and my son adores it.

I think the clue is in the title! definately a runny watery meal - however i have just made and eaten the American version, i added a bit of chilli (although recipe says to leave out spices) and once simmered i also added an oxo cube.
I spooned out into an oven dish and left most of the juice behind and then added on grated cheese, left the garlic slices off while it cooked and melted through and had the baguette with the meal - a hit with my hubby and toddlers -(actually got my 4yr old to eat kidney beans :) would make again but try to have it thicker some how - mushrooms would be a good idea (read somewhere) but my fam won't eat them - any ideas??x
PS I think the stock level is the problem (i used 500)- going to half it next time!
PPs Yes potatoes definatley would go - so may try that next time :o)

Have made this a few times now, however don't tend to follow the exact recipe for the mince - usually use my bolognnaise or cottage pie recipe. Like the bread topping idea though - stays lovely and soft underneath but nice and crispy on top.
