Serves 1 - 6 Litres

Once you have started the ginger beer plant you can keep making ginger beer from it. When you divide the plant give half to a friend

  • The plant
  • 1/2 pint warm water
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 10 sultanas
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 7g yeast sachet
  • to feed (everyday for 1 week)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • To make the drink
  • 1 pint boiling water
  • 1 lb sugar
  • 6 pint cold water
  • juice of 2 lemons


    1. to make the plant put all the ingredients in a screw top jar. Cover tightly then put in a warm place for about 3 days or until the plant is bubbling gently.
    2. Feed the plant as given every day for 1 week.
    3. after 1 week, make the ginger beer. Put the boiling and sugar into a bowl and stir until the sugar is dissolved add the cold water and stir in the lemon juice
    4. Strain the ginger beer plant through a double thickness of muslin, squeezing out all the liquid. Do not throw out the residue. Stir the liquid into the bowl. pour the ginger beer into bottles seal and keep 3 days in a cool place before drinking
    5. the residue is now divided in half, give half to a friend in the screw top jar to stat again. add 1/2 pint cold water and feed, feed for 1 week as before

when halving the plant, after making the ginger beer, do you add more yeast before feeding ?

The recipe says 2 tsp ground ginger. Is this fresh ginger or powdered? How long will the 10 pints keep for? Do you store it in the fridge?
