Jackfruit pieces on a plate with whole fruit in background

Jackfruit has become increasingly popular in the UK, featuring in…

  1. Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the onion until very soft, for around 10-12 mins. Add the cinnamon, cumin and paprika to the onions and cook for a further 2-3 mins. Next add the Tabasco, vinegar and bbq sauce and mix well before adding in the tomato, the drained jackfruit and 200ml water. Leave to simmer gently, covered, for 30 mins stirring every 5-10 mins to help break down the jackfruit, then take the lid off and cook a further 10 minutes.

  2. Once cooked, use a fork to make sure all of the jackfruit is well shredded.  Check seasoning and add another tbsp of bbq sauce if necessary for extra stickiness.

I really wanted to like this as my partner and I are trying to eat a mainly plant based diet. The sauce was really tasty, but the Jackfruit is really unpleasant. It tastes quite metallic and no amount of sauce or spice can cover the flavour. It’s like sucking a battery ( I imagine!)

Found this too sweet, but will try again with some chipotle paste!

Nicer than I was expecting. Great flavour and truly meaty texture.

As jackfruit has no taste of its own I could understand that the taste would only come from the sauce, but I was hoping that the jackfruit would provide the texture of pulled pork. Unfortunately, it was sloppy and a total waste of time and effort. I haven't given up and have sourced another recipe that involves cooking it in the oven, which hopefully will give it a dryer and firmer texture.

I followed the recommendations of previous reviewers - thank you! I made my own bbq sauce (tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, mustard and spices) and it is definitely the predominant flavour. I also used the full quota of cinnamon, which I thought added warmth and was not overpowering to me. Goes perfectly with Sweet Potato Tex Mex. Very successful, will definitely make again.

Best pulled jackfruit recipe I've tried (third or fourth I've had a go at recently) - not too heavy on the tomatoes or spice, but has a nice kick. Really easy and uses mainly storecupboard ingredients. Definitely pick a barbecue sauce you like, as this is one of the dominant flavours - we used Meat Lust barbecue mop sauce (available at Sainsbury's). I order 6-packs of tinned jackfruit from Amazon.

Made this for a dinner party and served with ‘vegan mac and cheese’ and the ‘sweet potato tex mex salad’ (both also on the site). Enjoyed by our vegan guest and meat eaters alike, however it didn’t really resemble ‘BBQ pulled’ flavours - very very sweet and more like a tagine flavour. I strongly recommend leaving out the cinnamon altogether, far too over powering. I added lots of salt, pepper, some cider vinegar, garlic and onion powder to try and counteract the sweetness. Probably wouldn’t make again, but enjoyed trying it.

The core part of the tinned jackfruit doesn’t break down so cut it off before cooking. I found this recipe too spicy (my homemade bbq sauce is quite spicy). I think the amounts of Tabasco sauce and the paprika could be halved. I thought it was also quite sour so needs counteracting with salt and garlic powder.
