For the topping

  • 450g light muscovado sugar
  • 7 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 large handfuls marshmallows

Method

  1. Butter a large baking dish (about 2-3 litres in size). Sift the flour, ½ tsp salt, caster sugar, baking powder and 6 tbsp cocoa powder into a bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, eggs and vanilla. Mix the dry and wet ingredients together, then pour into the baking dish. This can be covered with cling film and chilled for up to 24 hrs.

  2. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and boil the kettle. Take the pudding out of the fridge and uncover, if necessary. Sprinkle the muscovado sugar and cocoa evenly over the pudding, then pour 700ml boiling water over the top.

  3. Bake for 35-45 mins until the pudding is puffy and firm in the centre. Scatter over the marshmallows and return to the oven for 30-second intervals until they are just melting. Serve straight away – it will be hot – with cream or ice cream

I made this with my 8 year old son and he really enjoyed making it. I only had a 4 litre dish to cook it in and it was just about big enough, it was HUGE. Very rich and very chocolatey, you can't eat a lot of it in one sitting and trust me we have big appetites! This fed 6 of us last night, 4 of us this afternoon and there is still enough for probably another 4 portions at least! The kids LOVED it and I will make it again when we next have people over for dinner for a family dinner. Yes there is a LOT of sugar in it but itw a once in a while treat pudding. I wouldn't personally stress too much about the marshmallows next time, I don't think they particularly added much.

Made this today as I had the ingredients handy (and I had forgotten to buy a dessert). Very easy to make, delicious and worked well scaled down to 2/3rds of the size. When I poured the water on I did wonder if it would work, but it did - lovely gooey sauce once it had cooled down a little. I also didn't have any muscovado so used soft brown sugar which worked fine.

I've made chocolate puddle pudding before, which was nice. This recipe is sweet, tasteless and dry. Will just use the nice recipe next time!

I was incredibly sceptical but followed the recipe and it turned out perfectly. My advice is to TRUST the RECIPE! The water works! Don't be tempted to stir it in or anything. It could have less sugar, but I did like the marshmallow.

Made this for my family the other day and it was absolutely delicious! It was also gigantic. It lasted for almost a full week but there were no complaints. Everyone just kept asking for more!

I've made this twice so far, and both times it's turned out well and has been very popular with my housemates! I do suggest placing a tin or something underneath in case of overspill, and I've always omitted the marshmallows because I'm not keen on them. Great recipe!

Found it needed around 45-50 minutes to allow for the sauce to thicken. Very rich and sweet pudding. Kids loved it. Would consider trying again with less sugar. The amount made could serve 12 - 15. I used a 33cm by 20cm dish and this allowed it to rise to become a lovely sponge.

I couldn't bring myself to add all that sugar so only added half the sugar on top plus half the water but all the 7 tbsp of cocoa and it came out brilliantly. The top was crispy, the middle really light and fluffy and the chocolate sauce thick and gooey. It could have done with a bit more chocolate sauce but my two litre dish was full and no more than half the water would have fitted. It did boil over the edges a bit so put a tray underneath to catch the drips. Very successful pudding - my guinea pig guests loved it!

I agree with the negative comments i'm afraid. tried to make it for my boyfriend on valentines day. I followed the recipe exactly and measured everything. Only cooked it for 30 minutes and it was almost burnt on the top. The inside was dry and flavourless and was in a soppy mush of brown water. Practically inedible and through it in the bin.
