Method

  1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven. Lightly flour a work surface and roll the pastry out to a 25 x 30cm rectangle. Mix the apples with the dates, 1 tbsp flour, the sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Spoon over one half of the pastry, leaving a border around the edge. Brush the edges of the pastry with a little of the egg, then fold the other half over the top, pressing the edges together to seal well. Slash the top with a knife and brush with the remaining egg.

  2. Place in the freezer for 10 mins to firm up the pastry, then carefully lift onto the hot baking sheet and bake for 20 mins. Drizzle with icing, if you like, and serve with custard or ice cream.

6 medjool dates for me and swapped cinnamon for mixed spice. Crimped the pastry edges with a fork, egg wash on top + generous sprinkle of demerara sugar - like a proper turnover. No icing... didn't really think it needed it. Mine served 8... between 4 it would have been massive portion. Served up with clotted cream ice cream or thick cream. Perfect. It would work nicely with all sorts of fillings, I'm going to try apple and frozen blackberries next.

Very easy to make and very good! I used 8 dates instead of 2, I guess 2 wouldn't really have made a difference in terms of taste.

Want to try this, don`t make many sweet things, but not sure about adding dry flour to the mix would make?

Hello Durdit. It would re-heat very well. Store in the fridge after you have made it and re-heat in a hot oven. Don't ice beforehand though as the sugar would melt when you re-heat it!

Would you be able to make this the day before and then reheat in the oven before your ready to eat?

Real easy and so yummy, i changed the cinnamon with 1 tsp of ground ginger which gives it a nice flavour.

Love it, love it, love it!! So simple and smells so festive when putting it together. Although I used a handful of raisins instead of dates.

Quick and tasty recipe, make sure that you add a bit of water to the mixture and par cook the mixture before it goes into the oven, otherwise the apples will be under cooked
