These truffles, from Good Food reader Jeanette Jones, make great gifts. Vary them with chopped walnuts, dried fruit or a splash of rum

Ingredients

  • 100g plain or milk chocolate
  • 75ml condensed milk
  • 100g Madeira cake crumbs
  • 50g ground almond
  • 100g icing sugar
  • cocoa and icing sugar, to decorate

Method

  1. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Once melted, add the remaining ingredients.

  2. Roll into walnut-size balls with your hands and pop into the fridge on a plate to chill and set. Once set, roll in cocoa or icing sugar. Will keep in the fridge for 1 week.

I made these last night for my other half - he's a chocaholic! They were so easy to make, although the mixing took some doing but they turned out really well - very rich! I used ideas from other comments, dipped some in plain chocolate and some in milk chocolate as well as icing sugar and cocoa . I will be leaving them in the fridge until they're all gone, just to keep them fresh - I doubt they'll be there long! Great idea for a gift! :-)

Everybody loved these. I used Greens Zesty Orange Cake mix instead of Madeira which gave it a unique taste, and coated in cocoa. I might try dark chocolate next time as vickyeds mentions. Very easy.

These were a huge success..very rich but very welled received by all. I changed the chocolate for dark chocolate with chilli and coated them in white chocolate and desicated coconut..will definitely do these again!

Instead of rolling in cocoa/icing sugar, dip into melted chocolate, then into chopped walnut, desiccated coconut or leave with just plain chocolate!

If giving these as a present, Will they last in the Box? or do they have to be kept in a fridge until eaten??

I add a little almond essence and dip them in melted chocolate rather than cocoa. Yummy.

I found these plain and quite tasteless, and they didn't taste like truffles at all! But they are quick to make though, so good if you're in a hurry.

do you have to use the condensed milk or can you just use normal milk?

Thanks for your question. It will change the recipe quite a lot to if you replace the condensed milk for ordinary milk as it is thinner and not sweetened. We think that it would spoil the recipe to take it out and haven't tested the recipe using normal milk so cannot guarantee perfect results.
