Simple Cherry Cake!

A recipe so simple and classic, it melts in your mouth with a explosion of taste. A great cherry recipe.

  • 200g of butter, softened. And extra for greasing.
  • 200g of sugar
  • 1tsp of vanilla essence
  • 2 eggs
  • 250g of self raising flour, sieved
  • 1tsp of baking powder
  • 2 tbsp of milk
  • 5g glace cherries
  • Jam fo filling
  • Icing sugar, for dusting.


    1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 C/160 C fan.Cream the 200g of butter and sugar along with the vanilla essence.
    2. Crack the eggs in to the bowl and stir in, the slowly add the flour and baking powder, stir until golden.
    3. Dice the glace cherries and gently fold in the glace cherries. Then grease two baking tins with the extra butter.
    4. Put the tins in the oven for 50mins until risen. Then take the cake out of the oven and let it cool for 10mins. Spread the jam in onto the cake and sandwich the cake together. And sieve icing sugar on top for a nice finish.

The recipe is all over the place. I don't just mean the grammar mistakes and the typos, or leaving out lines such as "Divide the cake mixture evenly between the two tins." The proportions of flour to butter/sugar to eggs is far too dense and 5g of cherries is ONE glace cherry. I just weighed one to check.

Grammar and punctuation is appalling! Never had a cherry cake where it has jam in the middle? Surely that will destroy the taste of the miniscule amount of cherries?

Why does this have a 5 star rating? I can't see any star ratings at all. The authors numerous errors and misspellings don't inspire confidence (surely site admin should proof-read for glaring mistakes even if they don't test) so my advice would be to avoid this one. Try Delia's version.

When you do add the milk? And 5g of cherries?? That's about half of one. Doesn't inspire confidence...

What's the milk for it doesn't seen to be in the method or an I missing something? Also 5g of cherries should that be 50g maybe? Looking forward to this coming out the oven!

I always thought, maybe wrong,that the cherries should be washed and then coated in flour to stop them sinking? am I right or wrong?.

I personally never do that when I make the cake, but feel free to try it, I'd love to know if it makes any difference to the end result.
