Cherry vodka

Cherry vodka

We say make it a double! This is perfect chilled, with a few cherries in, or make it long and add some soda or lemonade

Method

  1. Slit the cherries, but don't cut them in half.
  2. Put in a pan with the sugar and 150ml water, then heat, stirring gently, until the juices run and the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Remove from the heat, then spoon into a large bottle or jar.
  4. Add the vodka and mix well. Seal, then leave for 4 weeks before drinking to let the flavours steep. For ice cold vodka, keep the bottle in the freezer (it won't freeze solid) or simply decant into a carafe, if you like.

I've just made this year's new batch...and had to finish last year's batch to make room for it. Ie. it will keep in the fride perfectly for a year. I even bottled it into decorative bottles as gifts...even up to Christmas (if it lasts that long!). A brilliant recipe. Only one thing: stone the cherries first - I hear that the stones are poisnous (and it gives you something to happily chew on once you have finished your drink!). Enjoy!!

What isn't clear is whether you should put the juice into the bottle with the cherries?

Put the whole lot into the bottle: juices, cherries, sugar and vodka. The whole idea is that the heat releases the juice, if not it would just be vodka with cherries floating in it! Nice, but not AS nice! Enjoy.

Mary Cadogan didn't say to stone the cherries, so I've left them in. This is the second time I've made cherry vodka, and I'm sure I left stones in last year, and I'm still here to tell the tale! It also disappeared pretty quick last time, so going to make a few more batches while cherries are still in shops. Let you know what this batch will be like month from now.

This was really lovely, although I found that after the initial 4 weeks it tasted a bit weak, so I left it another 2 or 3 weeks in addition and then it tasted fantastic. Will definitely make it again next year when cherries are back in season. Currently making the Arrancello recipe (orange vodka) - another fantastic recipe on the GoodFood web-site. I also left the stones in when making this and it didn't cause any problems.
