  1. Video tutorial: Melting chocolate

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and line the bases of 2 x 450g loaf tins with baking parchment. To make the streusel topping, rub the butter into the flour, then mix in the demerara sugar and chopped pecans. Melt the chocolate either in the microwave or in a small glass bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until smooth and remove from the heat.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the egg, beating well between each addition. Sift together the flour, baking powder and cocoa and fold in using a large metal spoon. Add the mashed banana and chocolate and mix well.
  3. Divide the mixture between the 2 tins and top each with the streusel. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on a rack, then wrap in baking parchment or foil.

So very moist. Did not do topping. My one year old daughter rated this cake as yum yum. Will definitely do again as it remained moist even the next day.

Made this cake which everyone loved. Kept well for 4 days. Made following subs as didn't have all ingredients and still worked perfectly. I baked mine in a 2lb loaf tin and it still only took about 50 mins to cook. I added 1/4 cup of oil to banana instead of butter and 1tbsp of Nutella. I added 50g of Green and Blacks drinking chocolate instead of melted chocolate with the flour. Great recipe.

I didn't really like this cake even though it was very easy to do. I don't feel that the streusel topping adds very much. my young children didn't like this cake either. Very disappointing.

Highly recomend this cake all of the family loved it. The only thing i will have to mention is that the recipe dosen't tell you whether the chocolate should be melted or chopped!? I grated it (somewhere in the middle!) and it turned out lovely. I didn't do the topping, will try it next time though!

I halved this recipe and put into 12 fairy cakes (better for my small children). I also didn't cream the butter & sugar etc just bunged it all into a bowl and beat with electric mixer - mixed in 5 minutes and baked in 20 - my daughter was still licking the bowl!!

I didn't make the topping and instead of two loaf tins just made one big cake and cooked it for slightly longer (checked with a skewer before taking it out). Was quite annoyed that it took 3 bowls and thus more washing up, but my son loved helping to make it. This was very popular with my friends and is a very nice 'light' cake after all the mince pies.
