  • ½ recipe Multi mince (see 'Goes well with' below)
  • 400g spaghetti or other long pasta
  • 25g toasted breadcrumbs

  1. Heat the oil in non-stick frying pan. Tip in the carrot and cook for 5 mins to soften. Scoop out the tomatoes from the can and add to the pan, and cook for 5 mins more. Pour over the tomato juice and basil, then simmer for 15 mins. Whizz together in a blender until smooth. Can be frozen for up to three months

  2. Heat through with the Multi mince. Cook spaghetti according to pack instructions. Reserve some of the cooking water, drain and tip the pasta into the pan along with the sauce. Toss together, thinning with pasta water, if needed, and serve with the extra basil leaves on top and the breadcrumbs.

30 mins?! It took me over TWO hours to make this. And the sauce was terrible, i literally had to buy a ready-made sauce jar to eat with my pasta and mince! Another thing... that mince... they should put in BOLD in the introduction that this recipe is only “so simple” if you already have a batch of prepped mince that you’ve spent over and hour prepping......... i usually sweat by this site but this particular recipe, absolute fail......

This is a con; it is only quick and easy if you have already spent over an hour making the multi mince, the recipe for which only has two stated uses. .

There should be an alternative to buying Multi-mince as I want to make the whole recipe. Is that the whole point of this site as in the whole recipe. I can understand there is the convenience aspect for busy people but what about others who may want to try it?

Multi-mince is another recipe on this site (as opposed to an ingredient that is purchased) that can be used as a base for many dishes. There is a link on the rhs of this page that will take you to the multi-mince recipe, so that you CAN cook the whole recipe.

Great recipe but must use the Multi Mince recipe under the goes well with section. Otherwise i can understand why it would be bland. I am always surprised to read other reviewers mark down a recipe as bland when i have found it anything but! I wonder how many of these is down to not following the recipe or not seasoning properly?

The print button seems to be broken? When selected, the page just refreshes.

Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, you'll need to defrost the mince fully before using. Thanks, BBC Good Food team
