The gloomy dark days of winter are finally behind us, but that doesn't mean we couldn't all use an energy boost in the mornings. Caffeine is what most of us reach for when we're feeling groggy or tired, but sometimes it can lead to a crash later in the day – which is where adaptogenic coffee can really help.

London Nootropics' unique blend combines quality coffee with adaptogen (plant-based) extracts to give you that surge of alertness and focus, while reducing the side effects you might normally experience from a regular cup of coffee, like jitteriness and anxiety.

New for 2025 is Mush Love, a limited-edition coffee blend that London Nootropics has released in partnership with Fantastic Fungi – the brand best known for creating the viral Netflix documentary about the incredible science of mushrooms.

What is adaptogenic coffee?

Adaptogenic coffee is much like any other coffee in that it can boost your alertness – but it also contains adaptogens (mushroom extracts) that can lower the side effects of caffeine.

This is because adaptogens are said to balance out the stress hormone (cortisol) in your body and help to sustain your energy levels, minimising the risk of a hard caffeine crash later in the day.

What does adaptogenic coffee taste like?

London Nootropics' adaptogenic coffee is designed to taste just like regular coffee, though anyone new to adaptogens might detect earthier, nuttier flavours – particularly with Mush Love, which contains mushrooms like lion's mane and chaga.

There's no right or wrong way to make the perfect cup – London Nootropics suggests combining one sachet with 300ml of hot water, then a splash of your preferred milk, but you can also drink it black or with more or less water.

For the warmer months, you could even try making an iced adaptogenic coffee by mixing a sachet with a splash of hot water, then pouring the contents over ice and 200ml of milk (or cold water if you prefer your coffee black).

What’s included in London Nootropics’ adaptogenic coffee?

In the Mush Love blend, there are three adaptogen extracts – lion's mane, cordyceps and chaga – as well as 80-100mg of caffeine, which is about the same as a regular cup of coffee. It's also vegan and free from preservatives and artificial sweeteners.

The latter can be said for other blends in the London Nootropics range too, though these feature slightly different adaptogens. Mojo is made from cordyceps sinensis mushroom and Siberian ginseng extract – which are said to boost physical endurance, strength and vitality – while Flow contains lion's mane and rhodiola rosea extract, which can help with focus and clarity.

In Zen, on the other hand, you'll find L-theanine and KSM-66 organic ashwagandha root extract, which is best suited to those seeking calm and balance.
