  • 280g penne
  • 280g broccoli, cut into florets
  • 25g butter
  • 25g plain flour
  • 300ml milk
  • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
  • 140g mature cheddar, grated

Method

  1. Cook the pasta, adding the broccoli for the final 4-5 mins and cooking until tender. Drain well, then heat the grill.
  2. Heat the butter in a saucepan and stir in the flour. Cook for 1 min, then gradually add the milk, stirring well between each addition. Bring to the boil, stirring, then simmer for 2 mins, before stirring in the mustard, half the cheese and seasoning.
  3. Mix the pasta and broccoli into the sauce and spoon into an ovenproof dish. Scatter over the remaining cheese and place under a hot grill for 3-4 mins until golden and bubbling.

this was a hit for me and my kids. great recipe and can use anything veg wise that kids eat. but i quite liked the simplicity and speed of this recipe. A family meal for us :)

Great quick and easy recipe for family weekly meal. I added peas and tuna with the broccoli and some thyme and sage seasoning. My toddler and I found the 1 tbsp of wholegrain mustard slightly overpowering though, so will just half it next time. :)

This was really tasty! It was my fist time making a white sauce and I thought I was going to mess it up as it looked all lumpy but when I added the cheese, it blended beautifully. I used Dijon mustard instead of whole grain, semi-skimmed milk and reduced fat mature cheddar. Will definitely be making this again, might try with cauliflower next time or a mixture of broccoli and cauliflower. Try this, you'll love it. Easy, quick, cheap and delicious!

Really yummy dish, added some red onions to one lot, and asparagus to another. Both came out really well, great comfort food. I've also made one lot simply as pasta with a sauce, and it was still delicious, just needed to make the sauce a little thicker.

Really easy base recipe. I used pasta twists, spring greens and low fat cheese plus a tablespoon of parmesan and dijon mustard rather than wholegrain. It was still great :)

This was a lovely mid-week meal for the whole family! I added some garlic salt to the pasta whilst boiling for extra flavour, and added drained tuna to the sauce before pouring..extra hidden nutrition for the children!
A very well explained recipe and easy to make. Will definitley be making again.

Great recipe, really easy to do and turned out just like the photo! i added peas and more cheese to the sauce. i agree the sauce definitely needs some seasoning. added some bacon lardons as well which went really well with everything. big thumbs up!

A really good recipe, I don't have a grill so just made the sauce then mixed it in with the cooked penne and broccoli, is very tasty and moreish. Looking forward to having this again mmmm.

This is the easiest and best meal ever. I add cauliflower as well and use any type of pasta.
For another twist, add bacon bits as well.

Worked out very well. I sautéed a small finely chopped onion and added some diced lean bacon to the mix. Make a nice quick lunchtime meal for two. I halved the ingredients.

Really great twist on a macaroni cheese! The mustard addition is fab - was much easier to make the sauce. Of course I added some bacon to the mix, but at least I had my veg too ;)

Loved this! Added half an onion and 2 cloves of garlic, fried them and added them in the cheese mix at the same as the brocolli. Also added some green beans too. Brilliant!

This was a really tasty dish. I used English mustard and cheated by using white sauce granules, which is something I have never used before and it worked out really well. Will do this dish again.
