  1. Put the sprouts in a large pan, cover with boiling water and cook for 8-10 mins or until very tender. Drain, and leave to steam-dry for a few mins. Tip back into a saucepan and mash to a chunky texture with a potato masher. Add the butter, cream and nutmeg, and season well. Cook for a further 2 mins. Mix in half the chestnuts, then sprinkle over the remaining chestnuts to serve.

Made this as per recipe excluding nutmeg as I don't like it, was absolutely delicious!

Easy, tasty and went down a storm. Used bacon and smoked paprika instead of chestnuts. B.E.A.utiful.

Didn't have any chestnuts either so bashed up some mixed nuts and added them instead. I don't like sprouts but I really enjoyed these smashed ones! I would definitely make again and would try the chestnuts as well as using my mixed nut variation.

Didn't have any chestnuts - added chopped, fried bacon and left out the nutmeg - absolutely delicious - will be making over and over again!!!

I made this without the chestnuts at Christmas last year, and it got gobbled up between the 6 of us!! My partner will only ever eat the obligatory sprout on Christmas day, but I managed to get him to eat half a bag of them by serving up this recipe, replacing the chestnuts with chopped unsmoked bacon, as a side to a chicken breast wrapped in Parmaham. I have also served these smashed sprouts with sausages and am considering trying it this evening with fish pie. Absolutely love this version of a vegetable I once couldn't stand!

I couldn't find vacuum packed chestnuts, but followed the recipe otherwise and stirred in some cooked, chopped streaky bacon. Managed to get 2 packets of brussel sprouts eaten in one go on Christmas Day! Definitely saving this recipe.

If you are someone who has always wanted to like sprouts, but never quite been able to... this is for you! The cream gives a much milder flavour. I like sprouts, but absolutely could not get enough of these... I am still picking at them cold from the fridge! Although I live in the American South, I did manage to find chestnuts.. roasted them, ate half, and added the rest to the recipe. This was a big hit at Christmas, I will definitely be making this again- though next time it will have to be with something other than chestnuts :-(

Why not maxivida? I am going to do this for Christmas lunch but cant get chestnuts ( live in Brisbane) so will use hazelnuts or almonds and a little chilli.

could you cook this and freeze and then re-heat?

We would suggest doing this fresh for best results. You could cook and mash them the day before, then reheat with the last few ingredients on the day.
