  • 1 medium potato, peeled and diced
  • 1l ham or pork stock (see 'Try', below)
  • 500g frozen petit pois
  • 300g thickly sliced ham, trimmed of any fat and diced


  1. Heat a knob of butter in a saucepan and when lightly foaming gently cook 1 chopped onion until softened, but not coloured.

  2. Tip in 1 peeled and diced medium potato and stir to coat in butter, then pour over 1l ham or pork stock. Simmer until softened.

  3. Tip in 500g frozen petit pois and bring back to the boil. Cook for a couple of mins.

  4. Remove from the heat and blend until smooth. Stir in 300g diced ham and serve.

Used this recipe a few times now and it’s spot on. We have home grown pigs and I use the hocks to cure into ham hock for use in this recipe. They get simmered on the bone for 3 hours which makes them fall apart when you take them out - and you can then use the stock for this recipe. A word of advice if you do cure your own ham and use the stock though - the recipe calls for 1 litre but you might need to dilute it, as I've found it can be really salty from the curing process even if submerged overnight. I use about 350-400ml of the stock then top up to the required 1 litre with water. Love this recipe and keep making it time and time again.

Great recipe; really easy and so tasty! After reading the comments I added one more small potato, and I didn’t have ham or pork stock so used chicken! Didn’t appear to cause an issue taste wise although I can see why ham would enhance the flavour better, Also, as other tips suggested; I blended half the ham into the soup and stirred the rest through at the end along with a swirl of mint sauce. Really delicious!

This soup is delicious. I put in plenty of black pepper and used mashed potato as I had some that needed using up. My three year old loved it with some cheese grated in.

Always a winner for lunches, very filling. I use Knorr ham stock cubes, regular garden peas and blend half of the chopped ham as other members have suggested. If I have it in the fridge I also add a couple of handfuls of spinach leaves for extra goodness.

Cooked for a light Dinner tonight to use up left over Christmas Ham. Easy to make I added more potato, fresh parsley & tarragon. Blended & served with chunks of cheddar cheese & breadcrumbs... Tasty!!

Cooked for lunch today using ham stock from the weekend. Very quick and easy. A little thin I thought, so I just boiled up another couple of potatoes, added to the soup and re-blitzed - which did the trick.

Make this after I've boiled an unsmoked ham. The ham goes to glaze. The stock goes to soup. No need for chicken or veg stock.

Absolutely delicious soup, I am no fan of Pea and Ham soup but my husband absolutely loves it so made it as a treat. It was absolutely lovely, I followed tips from others on here and blended half of the ham and chopped the other to put in the blended. It was lovely 5*

This is magnificent! Also blended half the ham along with the peas - I had it just as for the first bowl and added a spot of mint sauce to the second - I couldn't choose which was best!

I don't have any stock available so will be using a stock cube, how much water should I mix it with??

Lovely and brilliant green. A nice change from the usually duller coloured and slightly floury split pea soups. Add a smidgen of garlic for extra flavour, plus some freshly chopped flat leafed parsley to serve. If it isn't thick enough for you, add a little flour, or a larger potato next time. I served ours with a swirl of half fat creme fraiche, some crispy baked croutons and ready prepared ham hock. Delicious!
