  • 150ml whole milk
  • 140g white bread
  • 50g raisins or dried cherries
  • 568ml pot of fresh custard
  • butter, for greasing

  • 5-7 tbsp caster sugar


  1. Heat oven to 140C/fan 120C/gas 1. Stir the custard together with the milk. Trim the crusts from the bread, cut into triangles, then place in a large bowl with the raisins or dried cherries. Pour over the custard mixture, then carefully stir everything together so all the pieces of bread are coated. Lightly grease a small ovenproof dish with butter, then spoon in the mixture.

  2. Cook for 30-35 mins until there is just a slight wobble in the centre of the custard. Sprinkle over the sugar to cover the surface, then pop under a hot grill for 1-2 mins until the sugar starts to melt and caramelise.

Firstly this is not what I call bread pudding, it is in fact a bread and BUTTER pudding. Second it tastes as bad as it looks. Not impressed by this recipe at all.

Having read the other comments, I used extra milk in my custard (650 ml instead of 450) to ensure that it wouldn‘t dry out. I also used the cooking temperature and timing from this recipe https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/bread-butter-pudding as it sounded like the usual bread and butter timing and temperature would be better than this recipe. But thank you for giving me the courage to attempt Bread and Butter Pudding with instant custard! Using the tips above, it tasted really, really good.

In the words of Prue Leith - it's not worth the calories! We had a whole carton of Waitrose's delicious Madagascan vanilla custard left over from Christmas day and, unable to bear wasting it, thought we'd give this recipe a try. The result was more like a milky soup than a pudding, leaving us wishing we'd just plonked the custard on to some sliced bananas. Ah, well ........

It's very simple and doesn't make what I'd call a good bread and butter pudding but in it's own way it is a great time saver and fine for a quick pud after a long day at work. I used Alpro soya custard because I needed it to be dairy free, and it all worked fine.

Bread and butter pudding was requested and as I was short on time I thought I'd try this. I thought it was OK but it didn't go down with my (usually easygoing) family. Lots was left and I'll try a more traditional one next time!

Didn't like this at all. I cooked mine for longer than 35 mins and it still didn't set like traditional bread & butter pudding. Didn't taste anywhere near as good as traditional recipe.

Personally I would call this Bread and Butter Pudding rather than Bread Pudding which for me is made very differently but still using up left over bread.
