Method

  1. Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and gently cook over a medium heat for 5-6 mins until softened but not coloured. Add the garlic and cook for a further min. Stir in three-quarters of the petit pois, then pour in the stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10-12 mins. Meanwhile, grill the bacon until crisp.

  2. Allow to cool for a few mins, then carefully transfer to a food processor and whizz until smooth. You might need to do this in two batches, depending on the size of your processor.

  3. Return the soup to the pan and add the remaining petit pois. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 mins or until the whole peas are tender. Season to taste, then stir in the butter, if using. Break the bacon into pieces and scatter over bowls or mugs of soup. The soup can be made up to a day ahead; just grill the bacon on the day.

Super tasty, made it for a Halloween party last night, everyone enjoyed it. I made it without adding the bacon so it was vegetarian, but put a bowl of fried chorizo next to it for the carnivores to add. Excellent for pleasing everyone! Very easy to make and with cheap ingredients. 5/5!

Just made this tonight. Cut the (doubled quantity of) bacon, and fried in pan. It stuck a little but frying the onions, the stuck pieces came right off. Drained the fat,but kept a little for the onions to be fried in. Doubled the peas and stock and it made enough for 5 adults with an added little something to dunk. A tasty, cheap, quick to make meal, that hits the spot in the depths of winter. Thankyou.

Delicious. I used a ham stock cube which was a great compliment to the bacon. Also I used normal bacon instead of streaky which worked just as well.

Really didn't expect this to be as tasty as is. So quick, cheap and easy to produce but absolutely delicious. Mmmm I think I'm going to make it a lot this winter. Also my childish side loved the thick green soup frothing and bubbling as I simmered the last peas - Witches brew is a very apt name!

This soup was really tasty - very filling. Can either have alone of with the bacon and a chunk of crusty bread. Yummy!

So easy and tasty, definately not one that improves with time though - best eaten straight away, otherwise the colour goes a bit murky
