  • 1 c. butter
  • 1 c. sugar>
  • 1/2 tsp. salt (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. molasses/black treacle
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder or soda (we used powder)
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ground cloves


    1. Cream butter and sugar.
    2. Stir in egg, molasses, and vinegar, beating well.
    3. Add flour, salt, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves and mix well.
    4. Refrigerate for three hours.
    5. Turn oven to 190 degrees. Prepare a surface with flour. Use rolling pin to roll dough to 1/8 inch thick. Use cookie cutters and put gingerbread men on a cookie sheet. Bake for six minutes. Let cool. Have fun decorating!

Sorry but really put off trying this recipe because of the measures. Really need to make sure that it is clear for us to follow.

Please could someone at the website decipher the measurements – most people use imperial or metric and all the comments above seem to have been ignored. Many of your recipes are brilliant, not least the wonderful Cherry Bakewell Cake, but some, like the gingerbread recipe above, require editing. Thanks

Sorry, can't trust cup measurements - how about giving quantities in grams / ounces? Will have to look elsewhere for a recipe the way, 190 degrees is gas mark 5.

I thought this was going to be a great recipe but looking at the ingredients I haven't a clue how much butter, sugar or treacle is require. Is 1c meant to mean a cup, but that sounds too much treacle. I think I'll give this a miss and look elsewhere for a recipe.
