Mixed wine case

You never quite know what summer’s going to do, so we’ve got all eventualities covered in this season’s mixed case. The whites range from crisp and refreshing, an appley Chenin Blanc from the Cape and a lime-soaked Chardonnay from Argentina, to something with a little more heft, the spicy Trazzera Vermentino from Sicily. The reds in ascending order of beefiness are a Zweigelt, which sounds like a unit of intergalactic distance but is actually a juicy light-bodied red from Austria, then a Chianti-a-like from Tuscany and finally a T-bone steak of a wine, the mighty Brigando from Portugal.

The wines:

Collezione di Paolo Poggerissi 2016
Danaris Blauer Zweigelt 2016
Brigando Shiraz Tinta Roriz Touriga Nacional 2016
Drakenskloof Chenin Blanc 2016
La Porteña Chardonnay 2017
Trazzera Vermentino Terre Siciliane 2017

There’s an interloper in the white case – a rosé, the award-winning Château Terrebonne from Provence. Made by gently pressing red grapes, mainly Grenache, it’s delicate, pale and completely irresistible. Then there are three of the zingiest whites known to man: the lean but not all mean La Porteña Chardonnay from Argentina, the lemony Pago Centro Sauvignon Blanc from Chile, and a South African speciality, an apple-scented Chenin Blanc. Finally, in the fuller category are two southern European finds: a Vermentino from Sicily and to round off, the Cabalié Blanc, a blend of three varieties (Viognier, Muscat and Colombard) from the Languedoc.

The wines:

Drakenskloof Chenin Blanc 2016
La Porteña Chardonnay 2017
Château Terrebonne rosé 2017
Pago Centro Sauvignon Blanc 2017
Trazzera Vermentino Terre Siciliane 2017
Cabalié Blanc 2016

There are some stunning wines in this season’s red case. Some of the grapes might not be so familiar to readers, but all of them offer flavour by the shedload. There are two that major on perfume and could take a little chilling on a summer’s day: a ripe German Pinot Noir and a luscious Austrian red. Then in the more muscular camp, there’s a Nero d’Avola from the sun-soaked island of Sicily, a Tuscan Sangiovese that you would swear was a Chianti from a top producer, an elegant Cabernet from one of Australia’s cooler regions, and finally the mighty Brigando from Portugal.

The wines:

Collezione di Paolo Poggerissi 2016
Danaris Blauer Zweigelt 2016
Brigando Shiraz Tinta Roriz Touriga Nacional 2016
Long Live The King Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
Massivo Nero d'Avola 2016
Haltinger Winzer Weiler Schlipf Spätburgunder 2014

All cases contain a free bottle of Prosecco and two Dartington champagne flutes (together usually worth £30.99).
