  • 140g frozen pea
  • 200ml chicken stock, fresh or made with ½ cube
  • 2 Little Gem lettuce, thickly shredded
  • 2 tbsp half-fat crème fraîche
  • 2 thick slices crusty wholegrain bread, to serve


  1. Heat the sunflower oil in a medium non-stick frying pan. Add the bacon, shallot or onion, and garlic. Cook gently, stirring, for 2 mins, then push to one side of the pan.

  2. Season the cod with ground black pepper. Fry in the pan for 2 mins, then turn over. Add the peas and stock, and bring to a simmer. Cook over a medium heat for a further 2 mins, then add the lettuce and crème fraîche. Cook for a couple mins more, stirring the vegetables occasionally, until the fish is just cooked and the lettuce has wilted. Serve with bread to mop up the broth.

I did alter it around ingredients I had in. Have a glut of green beans so added instead of peas. I also added some herbs and wine. It was such a hit and very easy. Will definitely be making again.

This was great! As ever (sorry to be that person) failed to stick to the recipe; used pancetta not bacon, added grated courgette at the start and then a good splash of white wine (needed using...) which we simmered down before adding the cod. Just used simple chicken Oxo and no garlic or onion as I can't eat them but was yum! BF has asked for it tomorrow too and apparently it's 'the best thing I've ever cooked'. Which is a bit upsetting really......

Made this for me and my husband tonight after work, it was delicious! I added some roasted butternut squash too and used double cream instead. It was really quick to make and really tasty. I think the stock you use is really important in this recipe else it probably would taste a little bland. Added some pepper too, will definitely be making again.

I swapped low fat cream cheese for creme fraiche (as that's what I had in the fridge) and we thought it was delicious! Not at all bland really yummy

Tried this dish as a different way of serving fish. Husband wasn't sure about the warm lettuce but he certainly ate his words and cleared his plate ! A great recipe to keep in the folio. Pep it up with some of your own favourite herbs or spices

Rather fed up to have spent quite a lot of money on this dish and to have come out with something quite bland (as others say, I now see) and uninteresting. Wont try it again.

Won't be making this again. It was passable but the thin insipid sauce didn't do it any favours. There are much better low fat dishes around.

Yet another recipe where 'healthy' seems to be synonymous with 'bland'. Very dull dish. The only flavour came from the bacon. Will not be cooking again.

I found the sauce far too runny and one lettuce would have been sufficient. If I made again, I would try using 100ml of stock.

Really yummy dish and healthy at the same time. Was very quick to make and made an ideal mid-week dish. I left out the creme fraiche but I think perhaps you do need it to add that little bit of creamy-ness.

I don't usually like meals without bread, potatoes, etc. but this was the exception. I used pangasius fillet with only one head of lettuce, 100 gr of peas and some single cream that I had in the fridge. It was delicious, healthy and very quick. Will definately make it again.
