  1. First make the meatballs. Split the sausage skins and squeeze out the meat into your largest mixing bowl. Add the mince, onion, parsley, Parmesan, breadcrumbs, beaten eggs and lots of seasoning. Get your hands in and mix together really well – the more you squeeze and mash the mince, the more tender the meatballs will be.

  2. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Roll the mince mixture into about 50 golf-ball-size meatballs. Set aside any meatballs for freezing, allowing about 5 per portion, then spread the rest out in a large roasting tin – the meatballs will brown better if spaced out a bit. Drizzle with a little oil (about 1 tsp per portion), shake to coat, then roast for 20-30 mins until browned.

  3. Meanwhile, make the sauce. Heat the oil in your largest pan. Add the garlic and sizzle for 1 min. Stir in the tomatoes, wine, if using, sugar, parsley and seasoning. Simmer for 15-20 mins until slightly thickened. Stir in the basil leaves, if using, spoon out any portions for freezing, then add the cooked meatballs to the pan to keep warm while you boil the spaghetti. Spoon the sauce and meatballs over spaghetti, or stir them all together and serve with extra Parmesan and a few basil leaves, if you like.

I also used the ready-made meatballs, but made the sauce as per the recipe with just the addition of some chopped onion added with the garlic - always looking for a way to get more veg into the diet. It was very quick and really tasty. Will probably do again.

I've made this twice, the only amendment I've made so far is the addition of some chilli flakes to the meat mixture. Excellent for cooking on a budget especially when you have a glut of tomatoes.

My favourite meal ever! These really are delicious. The whole family agreed these were amazing meatballs. The tomato sauce was extremely rich (even though I didn't use the red wine)- clearly loads of simmering works wonders. Bit of work rolling the meatballs, but it's all worth it. 10/10!!!

Wowowowowwow! Was looking for an alternative to the staple spag bol...these felt like so much more of a treat even though it's the same ingredients essentially. I live in Norway where "proper" sausages are hard to come by so I just used more beef mince. Made the full lot and will be freezing the leftovers. Cannot wait to have this meal again!

I halved the mince & used turkey I don't eat beef. It made 20 meatballs, it could make a few more if you make the balls small. I then froze 10 of them for another meal. The sauce I halved too but keep it at 4 garlic cloves...I love garlic & added chicken stock(no red wine).
The were LOVELY very tasty indeed!!!!!!!!! Turkey mince is also a healthier option :) definitely make again!!

Oh & the tip about placing the meatballs on greasproof paper to cook is a bri idea!

Very tasty. I fried the onion first and then added to the meatballs. I also added some toasted pinenuts to the meatball mixture which we all loved! Good idea to cook the meatballs on baking paper.

Wouldn't recommed using Lincolnshire sausages, I thought it was a little bland too. May be add some spices. But on the plus side it made lots and freezes reaaly well.

Really delicious meatballs and sauce that my 3, 6 and 8 year old enjoyed as much as mum and dad. Used Tesco's Finest Toulouse style pork sausages - only one pack of 6 - and that gave the meatballs a delicious garlicky and bacon flavour. The recipe says serves 10, but I stretched it to 3 meals to serve 2 adults and 3 boys quite easily.

Really, really fantastic - both the meatballs and sauce are fab and it's al so easy to make. Th only thing I migt change next time is to fry the onion a little before making the meatballs. Yummy!

Success! A meal that all the family loves.... really easy and I have 2 more batches in the freezer ready to reheat. Made them when my son's friend (age 7) who came for tea and he even mentioned to his Mum when he got home how lovely they were.

Just made the sauce as, like Robyn, we had already bought some quality meatballs from one of the supermarkets. I have added a dried red chilli for a kick and a finely chopped onion and mushrooms for a bit more bulk, can't wait to see what hubby thinks. Will definitely try making the meatballs as well next time.
