How to enjoy the perfect picnic

Blanket and basket at the ready? Follow Boursin’s pointers for picnicking in style

Nothing says summer quite like a picnic, so as long weekends of sunshine stretch out before us, what better way to spend a relaxing day with your favourite people? Of course, the key to success is in the prep, so before you head out with your hamper full of food and drink, Boursin® cheese is here to help with these handy tips.

Travel light

Choose your accessories carefully. Nobody wants to struggle with a heavy basket or cool bag, so stick to the essentials. Besides food and drink, you’ll just need a blanket, napkins, bin bags and dry ice packs (or similar). When it comes to containers, plates, cutlery and glasses, go for lightweight, reusable options if you can, as not only will they be easier to carry, but they’ll also look more stylish and be better for the environment.

Pack like a pro

Packing a picnic basket is a little like packing your food shop. Start by putting the heavy and sturdy things at the bottom, with the lighter, more delicate items (such as crackers, fruits and cakes) resting on the top. Keep your food nicely chilled by ensuring your ice packs are frozen the day before, then only pack your bag just before you leave the house. Then, when you arrive at your destination, try to keep your picnic out of the sun. Leave it in a shady area, such as under a tree or an umbrella, instead.

Please the crowd

The secret to any outdoor feast is variety. Offer an assortment of sweet and savoury foods, and don’t be afraid to ask your guests to each share a dish of their own. You can’t go wrong with a selection of summertime staples, including salads, wraps, quiches and pies. Light bites like crisps, dips, olives, strawberries and nuts are often firm favourites, too.

An easy way to add a touch of sophistication is to bring along a pack of your favourite Boursin® cheese. You can’t beat some classic Boursin® Garlic & Herbs smothered lavishly onto a cracker or a chunk of baguette. Pair it with a refreshing elderflower cordial or citrussy iced tea, or even something simple like sparkling water.

Say cheese

Go old school and bring along a Polaroid or disposable camera to take photos throughout the day. Whether it’s a picnic birthday party or you’re just enjoying a quiet, relaxing afternoon with family, a sunny day with good food calls for memories to be captured!

Make it your own

The great thing about a picnic is that the outdoor setting provides all the décor you need, but a quality blanket and perhaps even some cushions will bring elegance and comfort to the experience. If you’re marking a special occasion, hanging some bunting on a nearby tree will help it feel more celebratory. You could also create a summer playlist, pop a portable speaker in your bag and put on some tunes – although keep it low and be considerate of neighbours and wildlife with the volume. You might want to play cards or introduce games or a quiz to keep little people entertained as well.

If you really want to put your own spin on things, why not theme your picnic? Ask guests to dress up or bring snacks inspired by a certain region or country. For example, you could have a French-themed picnic with macarons, croissants, charcuterie, freshly baked bread and pâté. And some creamy Boursin® cheese will really take it up a notch. The Velvety Garlic & Herbs is made for spreading and dipping, which is ideal for a picnic, while the Truffle Flavoured will add a beautiful richness to any grazing board or even a pasta salad.

Pack it up

After a beautiful day in the great outdoors, don’t forget to tidy up and responsibly dispose of any rubbish you may have. It’s essential to take a bin bag with you, so you can leave your picnic area as clean and litter-free as you found it. Finally, avoid any unnecessary food waste by taking home any leftovers you have, where possible.
