  • 250g assorted biscuits, roughly chopped
  • 250g assorted nuts, or a mix of nuts and dried fruit
  • 300g milk or plain chocolate, or a mixture of both, chopped
  • 100g butter, chopped

  • 140g golden syrup


  1. Butter and line a 20cm square tin with non-stick baking parchment. In a large bowl, combine the biscuits and nuts, halving any larger nuts. Melt the chocolate, butter and golden syrup in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth and glossy, then pour this over the biscuit and nut mixture.

  2. Tip the mixture into the tin, then flatten lightly – it doesn’t need to be completely smooth. Chill for at least 2 hrs or overnight before cutting into squares.

Love this recipe. So easy. I used 150g of chopped soft figs and made this up to 250g with chopped pecan and almonds. I put the figs in with the melted chocolate mixture to soften them before adding the nuts and biscuits. Great use of left over nuts and dried fruit.

Very easy, used value biscuits from Tesco. You could use absolutely any biscuit/dried fruit/nut combination and this would be a success and you get absolutely loads out of one recipe.

Very easy indeed. I did this with a packet of rich tea and a bag of mixed chopped nuts, and it turned out just fine! Looking forward to trying it with Christmas left-overs though; I suspect the results will be much closer to the tiffin that I love at the local coffee shop!

Easy to make and everyone loved them, I put dried cranberries, apricots and walnuts in them, but will try different combinations next time.

This is a fabulous treat and looks really appetising when cut into little squares. I used a mixture of dark and milk chocolate, Digestive Lights biscuits and a combination of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and marshmallows. I used less syrup (about 100g) and less fat (75g of olive oil spread rather than butter) and it worked a treat. If you keep the fat, chocolate and syrup on a very low heat and don't let it get too hot, you can melt it all straight in a pan, no need for the bowl over hot water. After putting it into the tin I stuck it in the freezer for the first 15 minutes and then in the fridge for a further 45 minutes and by then it was ready to cut. Absolutely delicious, will be making again, thank you!

These are delicious. I used Lindt chocolate, 100g dark, 100g milk and 100g dark choc orange. Digestive + rich tea biscuits and mixed nuts. Very nice, you only need a small piece. Great to give as presents also :)

For those of you wondering how long these keep for, I would suggest looking at the "best before" dates on all the ingredients & then using the nearest date as the "how long will they keep for" rule. I have kept these in my fridge for over a month - but only because I thought they were all gone, then found some in a bag at back of fridge. They were still lovely.

I actually get BEGGED to make this at work now... I chuck in whatever treats I have to hand but like Stacey says shortcake biscuits are best! So far I've used marshmallows, kitkats, honeycomb, milky way, malteasers and also topped it with drizzles of white chocolate :)

I tried these first to see what they were like, and like Four Candles above I used half milk and half dark chocolate. I used digestive biscuits, glace cherries, a few nuts and some fruit, and my family loved them. I shall definately be making them again.

It does sound nice but like a few other commenters I would like to know how far in advance I should make these as there is no mention of how long they keep for. It also doesn't say whether they are suitable for freezing. Elephantum, you mentioned you put some in the freezer? How did they fare?

Last year I made this on Christmas Eve instead of the usual Christmas cake, but I shaped it into a Yule Log.

I just took the mixture out of the fridge after about 15-30 minutes and carefully used the baking parchment to help meroll the mixture into a log shape and hey presto, a festive, alternative and yummy yule log!

I also substituted some of the nuts/fruit for marshmallows!

Looks great and tastes wonderful. They didn't last very long at all with a few chocolate lovers in the house. great idea for christmas gifts to family members who already have everything else.

I made these and they were delicious. I changed the golden syrup for honey and used half milk chocolate and half Nutela to make up the chocolate required. They were absolutely gorgeous! I have put half into the freezer, in small batches, so that I can pull them out as a regular treat! I will definitely make them again, thanks Good Food!

quite a few have said its very sweet, has anyone tried making them without the golden syrup?

wouldn't the chocolate be enough to bind everything?

I used less syrup than the recipe said (just under 100g, rather than 140g), and a mixture of dark and milk chocolate, and it wasn't too sweet. I think it could work with even only half the amount of syrup in the recipe. Perhaps maple syrup would work instead, as it's not so sweet.

Whole family loved these... used 2 thirds milk choc and 1 third dark. Used shortcake and oaty biscuits, sultanas, cherries, mixed nuts and sunflower seeds.
Admittedly eating 2 pieces straight off may result in nausea... but they are good!

Made a few times now, yummy with marshmallows added... I use mini marshmallows, glace cherries, raisins and a few broken up pecans as my nuts/dried fruit bit of the recipe.
