Ingredients

  • 175g softened butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 175g golden caster sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 140g self-raising flour
  • 85g ground almonds
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 100ml milk
  • 4 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 50g plain chocolate chips or chunks
  • few extra chunks white, plain and milk chocolate, for decorating

Method

  1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Grease and line a 2lb/900g loaf tin with a long strip of baking parchment. To make the loaf cake batter, beat the butter and sugar with an electric whisk until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, flour, almonds, baking powder, milk and cocoa until smooth. Stir in the chocolate chips, then scrape into the tin. Bake for 45-50 mins until golden, risen and a skewer poked in the centre comes out clean.
  2. Cool in the tin, then lift out onto a wire rack over some kitchen paper. Melt the extra chocolate chunks separately in pans over barely simmering water, or in bowls in the microwave, then use a spoon to drizzle each in turn over the cake. Leave to set before slicing.

This is my second time of making this cake. Nice and easy to make. I just threw all the ingredients in to my mixer and turned on then stirred in the chocolate chips.

I omitted the almonds and upped the flour. It is a really tasty, moist cake. However, it takes quite a bit longer than the stated baking time - approx 25 mins extra - so don't be alarmed if at the end of 45-50 mins your cake is still uncooked.

Turned out great. I doubled the quantity of chocolate chips as I wanted every piece to have at least a few! I also needed to bake for an extra 25 minutes as most people have indicated.

This is the first cake I've baked since I was a school!! The instructions are good (even for someone with an M.E. brain like me!), but as others have said it took longer to cook - an hour at 150 degrees for me.
I changed the top a little. Asda do their own brand version of Nutella but they do a dark choc version. I spread a good layer on top and added chocolate sprinkles. It looked and tasted divine, so thanks for a great recipe!

A really lovely moist Loaf Cake which kept really well, not that it lasted long with my family! Definitely needs to cook longer than stated though - this will certainly be a regular in our house.

One of the best chocolate cake recipes. It was so light, spongey, and moist and the ground almonds gives it a nice nutty kick! I always cover my cakes with foil as soon as they come out of the oven (for a couple of hours) as it helps lock in all the heat and softens the cake more. 5 out of 5!

Made this cake,and it was very good.Didn't have any ground almonds so I used 200 grams of self raising flour and tsp of vanilla extract.Like others, this cake takes longer than the recipe time,just over an hour.

Made this cake yesterday, It was very good, moist and chocolatey. It did take 60 mins to cook in my oven. I only drizzled white chocolate over the top.

I made this as the base for a puppet stage cake and it worked wonderfully,I'm a church puppeteer in my spare time and it was our birthday cake,what I liked apart from the simple recipe and fantastic taste was the texture for me to shape it around.Great for themed cakes.

Hi , I have just baked this with my 6 year old , instead of ground almonds we used somalina , it was very easy ! And delicious . Would recommend to this cake .

Great simple chocolate loaf cake, very moist. I halved the recipe for a 1l loaf tin and omitted the ground almonds and it still turned out great!

I Made this Yesterday for my son's birthday, I needed to make it round so I used 2 shallow 8in tins and split the mixture between the two, it was only when it was cooked that I realised I would need a filling, so I used nutella. I also didn't have any ground Almonds so I used peanut butter instead. It all worked out great though, and my son loved it. But it was very heavy :) nobody could manage a second slice.

Delicious chocolate loaf cake, I left out the ground almonds as I didn't have any in - used plain flour instead of self-raising but just put an extra tsp of baking powder in to compensate and added some chopped up hazelnuts as I love them with anything chocolatey. Overall a lovely moist cake, which took nearer 1 hour 10 mins to bake than 50 just kept an eye on it - will defo make again, my niece and nephews loved it.

This cake tasted nice i added melted plain and milk chocolate and i also added white chocolate chip. I also substituted almonds for hazelnut and it is really nice i will definetly make it again. yummy yummy
