  • 200g unsalted butter
  • 200g bar dark chocolate, 70% cocoa, chopped
  • 4 large eggs
  • 200g golden caster sugar
  • 50g plain flour
  • 50g ground almonds
  • cocoa powder, for dusting

Method

  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Butter and line the base and sides of a 23cm springform or loose-bottomed cake tin. Put the butter and chocolate into a pan and gently melt together until smooth. Meanwhile, using an electric whisk, beat the eggs and sugar together for 5 mins until billowy and about the thickness of old-fashioned custard.
  2. Pour the chocolate and butter mix into the whisked egg and sugar, then fold it in very carefully using a large metal spoon. Mix the flour, almonds and ¼ tsp salt together, then fold into the mix until even. Spoon into the tin and bake for 35-40 mins until evenly set with a slight crust all over the top. Leave the cake to cool until warm, then release from the tin. Dust with cocoa, then cut into wedges.

I cannot praise this recipe enough! Did it as a dessert for a last minute dinner party last week and it was perfect. I am not really a 'cake' person - not very good at making them and don't normally like anything too chocolatey.... I had seconds, as did everyone else :) Great recipe for a lovely moist texture that is more dense than a brownie but not as rich as a torte. Yum!

Lovely dessert, went down well in this chocolate lovers household. Mine cracked on the top so didn't look quite as good as the picture but tasted great nevertheless :-)

Made this for a friend's dinner party. Very rich! I would suggest a small slice would satisfy even the the most ardent chocaholic. Warmed it in the microwave and served with a dolop of vanilla ice-cream. Yumm!

Impressively classy. Would be good for a dinner party or a girlie get-together!

Too rich for us, though. I'd suggest serving only the tiniest sliver (otherwise it's sickly and hard-going).

Easy to make. I enjoyed baking it!

Made this loads of times, never looks quite as good as the picture but with a dusting of cocoa powder it looks fine. Always tastes great

This was so easy to make but still tastes divine. Served it at room temperature, dusted with icing sugar and some raspberries. Will be making it again!

I made this today and was delicious and so easy to make. I used 100g dark chocolate (70%) and 100g milk chocolate (dairy milk) because I find dark chocolate too rich and it came out yummy and chocolatey! Definitely best served warm with ice cream/a glass of cold milk.

I'm gluten intolerant so I used 100 g of ground almonds instead of any flour and it worked out fantastically. I also used little tartlet trays to make individual tortes which were cooked for 15-20mins.

Fantastic recipe and versatile too!.

This fantastic torte has become a staple in my house! So simple and yet tastes complicated. As I use organic ingrediants and Green & Blacks chocolate, this is rather a pricey recipe, but well worth the dip into the purse. I even used this recipe at one of my bake sales, and it was my best seller :)
highly recommended. Did a taste test between this recipe and the Thorntons brownies and this one hands down!!!

This is so simple, looks great, and tastes even better. A dinner party fave that freezes brilliantly, and goes great paired with the ice cream or even some double or softy whipped cream.

Made this for a dinner party the night before it took place. Just warmed it up whilst we were eating the main. It was delicious. Served it with raspberries and vanilla ice cream/cream. Will definately make it again, and again, and again...

Absolutely delicious, went down very well with both my dark chocolate freak friend and my husband who is not a fan of dark chocolate. The toddlers loved it too. I keep one in the freezer for emergency dinner parties - it is comes out perfect even after 6 months in the freezer :-0

I love this cake, melted butter and choc in microwave which cut down on time. Reallt easy and exceptionally tasty. Next time i am going to add chopped pecans instead of ground almonds

Not only it's very easy and quick to make but it ws a real success. I just served it with double cream and it was lovely, but no doubt ice cream would make it fabulous!

Did this for a night with the girls and it was a real hit. I didn't have time to make the ice cream so simply bought a tub of good vanilla, took 2 scoops out and added 3tbl marmalade, 1tbl orange juice and zest of an orange, smushed it all and put it back in the freezer. Fabulous!

I made this with the marmalade ice cream too. Gorgeous. Just the right amount of richness - I had made 2 cakes, one supposedly to freeze, but family finished it off!
