  • 400g can chopped tomato
  • 600ml beef stock
  • 1 garlic baguette, split into slices

Method

  1. Brown the mince in a non-stick pan for a few mins, then tip into a bowl. Whizz the onions in a food processor until finely chopped (or roughly grate if you don’t have one). Tip into the pan with the oil, then cook for 2-3 mins until soft. Add the spices, cook for 1 min. Return the mince to the pan with the tomatoes and stock, then bring to a boil. Simmer for 20 mins.

  2. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6 and spoon the mince into an ovenproof dish. Arrange the baguette slices over the mince, then bake for 12 mins until the bread is crisp on top.

I really didn't enjoy this. Like StaceyB85 said, this is just a simple chilli recipe and an uninspiring one at that. I didn't add all the stock but still found it to be too "sloppy" and the garlic bread was crisp on top and soggy on the bottom - not pleasant. Unfortunately this one is being deleted from my binder :(

Excellent dish. added extra veg and extra chilli to taste. also grated cheese on the top. yummmy! will be a firm favourite x

This is basically just a simple chilli put in a dish and baked with garlic bread on top. Made the recipe as stated with the addition of kidney beans for a bit of bulk and it was nice but a bit bland compared to the chilli recipe I normally use. However it was nicer eaten with the garlic bread (I used Tesco garlic bread slices with cheese for a bit of extra flavour). Dont think I'll make the same chilli again but will definitely use the idea of garlic bread on top of my usual chilli when I fancy something a bit different.

What a great way to use up a leftover garlic-loaf and a pack of otherwise uninspiring minced beef! First Class!

Used a tin of baked beans in mild chilli sauce. Gave it just enough of a bite that the kids wouldn't complain. Also used round crispy bread rolls and hollowed out the middle. This made a deep receptacle for lots of mince mixture. Will definitely make it again.

Simple to make and very tastey. I went with the BBQ sauce suggested previously and it was great. Have made this many times now!!

Very tasty and a great new way to have mince. Didn't use all the stock though, otherwise I think it might have been a bit too watery.

ive followed the recipeas it says (barring the onion bit, coz some evil bugger used mine, so added peas instead), its currently in the oven now. smells divine atm. i added a tad bit of garlic to the mince for flavour, and hopefully the recipe will come out great. it smells so good right now though....

I had my husband licking the bowl out!
The in-laws loved it too!

I added some kidney beans as other reviewers did and it bulked the recipe out nicely!

Will definitely be doing this again!

I agree with the other comments that there is too much stock in this, I added only 500ml and that was too much. I only had one onion so added a couple of sticks of celery and a carrot to the blitzer and also added a small tin of kidney beans to the mince, as well as paprika, cayenne and tomato puree. To be honest, by the time I had reduced the sauce I decided the whole dish was a bit to much of a fag to be worth it!

mmm lovely meal whilst the mince was simmering i added a bit of cornflour and it thickened the sauce lovely so when it came out of the oven it was lovely and thick and i bought extra strong garlic bread cos i love garlic lol i will certainly be making this again fantastic meal

Makes a good mid-week family dinner, quick and easy to throw together. It was rather watery, so I had it on a rapid simmer for about 35mins rather than the 20 suggested, which made it nice and thick and concentrated the flavours. If I was making it for just myself and my husband, would probably add more chilli and cumin and perhaps some paprika, and next time would try to sneak a few more veg in there for the benefit of my 7-year old!

I liked the idea of this dish as a child friendly mid-week meal, but I did add more flavour with extra cumin and chilli, and also some smoked paprika. I also added finely chopped carrots and courgettes that needed to be used up, which helped to bulk up the dish so the sauce wasn't too runny. I served it with green beans and new potatoes.

Followed suggestions and halved the stock to 300ml, which did give a nice, thick(er) consistency. I found the dish lacked depth of flavour (admittedly I added only 1 tsp of chilli powder as cooking for fussy 10-year-old) so added extra stock cube, some sun-dried tomatoes blitzed in the food processor with a bit of oil from the jar, and quite a bit of tomato puree. I did like the garlic bread idea, and topped it with mature cheese. Not sure I'll be rushing to cook again. Have to say, though, leftovers good in a tortilla wrap!
