A great soup to warm you up and fill your belly on cold winter days!

Ingredients

  • 1-2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 clove garlic crushed
  • 4 rashers/125g bacon chopped
  • 2 large or 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 600ml/1pt vegetable or chicken stock
  • 300ml/1/2pt milk
  • 500g peas, frozen or fresh
  • 4 slices/125g cooked ham cut into small pieces

Method

    1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Gently fry the onions, garlic and bacon over a low heat for about 10 mins until the onions are soft and the bacon is browned.
    2. Add the potatoes and stock to the pan, bring to the boil, turn down heat and simmer for about 10 mins until potatoes are cooked.
    3. Pour in milk and tip peas into pan, simmer for a further few mins until peas are done. remove from heat.
    4. Add chopped ham to the pan, then blend until smooth. season with salt, pepper and a little sugar if needed.
    5. Serve with big wedges of homemade crusty bread.

Made this yesterday. Absolutely delicious. Just had a text from the other half, saying that he loved it for his lunch. My son ate it also, which is very unusual. Will definitely make again. I left some bigger chunks of ham & put them in at the end.

I have to say that although pea and ham soup isn't my favourite, after making this - it is now! It was so delicious, and my boyfriend ate about three bowls of it, and told me it was the nicest soup he's ever tasted.

I used the best quality frozen peas i could get, and i used a little more cooked ham than suggested. I put most of the ham in the soup before i blended it, and then just put the rest in and stirred it all with a spoon. Personally, I like something to chew on when I eat soup, otherwise I find it a little boring.

Gorgeous green colour, it fills you up, tastes great, and it's good for you too! Definitely a winner in our home :o)

Delicious soup, brilliant to freeze. I made it without the potato as I'd forgotten I didn't have any, still worked really well and was not too thin at all.

Lovely, quick and easy soup. Warming on a cold day. Kids loved it asking when I'm making it again! I used a ham stock cube instead of chicken to give a deeper flavour.

Soup was easier to make and very filling. I used pancetta instead of bacon and it was delicious. Defiantly will make again!

Wonderful recipe - a real winner ... we use smoked beef sausage instead of bacon as my husband doesn't eat pork.

i made this and it was amazing the flavour and colour were great. Smoked bacon is best to use it gives it a really good flavour, thanks for putting it up any more good recipies??

Mmmm delicious! I can't really comment on the consistency, as I don't tend to weigh or measure things, just chuck 'em in. I used baby new potatoes (skins on, cut into quarters) and fresh thyme. Then, after blending, I stirred in crispy fried diced pancetta. Yummy!

I really liked the soup - it was really easy, quick and made a tasty lunch for me and my pops from stuff in the freezer/cupboard. He loved it too, so all good as he is a tough guest to please. Plus I used chunks of roast ham which was leftover from the sunday roast, which was delicious. But the pea and potato idea worked a treat. Yes it was a bit thick, but I just watered it down a bit with some stock. Recommend for a quick easy soup. Yum. Oh I added a bit of fresh mint - which was lovely - just about 4-5 leaves from the garden, which made it a bit lighter, summery and lunchy.

You can get this in Holland in the winter - its called urter soup - and its great!

Nice taste, but definitely needs more stock far too thick for my liking.

This soup is absolutely delicious. Great colour and texture and very easy to make. I used pancetta instead of bacon and petit pois instead of peas because they were both in the freezer. I sprinkled some finely chopped ham on the top which looked nice. It was just as good on day 2 so you can make it in advance.
