Method

  1. Heat grill to high. Heat the oil in a large frying pan, then soften the onion and pepper for 5 mins. Stir in the garlic, fry for 1 min, tip in the tomatoes and gnocchi, then bring to a simmer. Bubble for 10-15 mins, stirring occasionally, until the gnocchi is soft and the sauce has thickened. Season, stir through the basil, then transfer to a large ovenproof dish.
  2. Scatter with the mozzarella, then grill for 5-6 mins until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

TIP

You can freeze the bake for up to a month - just defrost and bake in a medium oven for 20-30 mins until piping hot.

this was my first time with gnocchi, expectations were probably too high. the sauce is a classic one (good one), also added a splash of wine which gave it a nice twist. the red pepper gave it a nice touch as well. it definitely doesn't serve 4 though.. 3 tops!

Very easy to make and very tasty. I added a little bit of water during cooking to make it a bit more "saucy" and served with some crusty bread!

Yummy! I cooked the gnocchi according to instructions on bag and made the sauce separately (used red and yellow peppers) and then mixed. Didn't have any basil so stirred in 2 tbsp of pesto. Also used the entire 125 g mozzarella, not healthy but so yummy. Fantastic easy and fast recipe, next time I might add some chorizo or aubergine.

Great, but I think the next time I make it I will adjust seasoning (perhaps by adding tomato paste) to try to intensify the flavour, as there was a slight watery feeling to it.

Made this dish tis evening, and totally loved it. Easy to make and delicious. I didnt have any garlic or basil and I replaced mozarella with cheddar and it was still extremely nice.

I added a little water too, and flavoured the sauce with a litter worcester sauce and black pepper. I was also short of basil so added a little pesto. Served with parmesan and garlic bread. Very tasty and will make again.

Simple to make, and very tasty. Half a ball of mozzarella wasnt enough- used the whole lot. Would be nice with some pancetta or choped bacon fried in with the onions.

Tasty comfort food - we added chorizo to the sauce and used goats cheese instead of mozzarella - worked well!

Absolutely great idea for gnocchi!!! My husband would never have them on 'traditional way',just boiled and served sprinkled with olive oil and parmesan. This time ask for more! I used DC's suggestions: no mozarella, but some creme frache, some strong cheddar staterred on the top, and no basil- couldn't find it. One thing- 'bubble' time is to long, I thing. Gnocchi are ready in 2-4 min and 10-15 min is far to long. I boiled the sauce for about 5-6min and was lovely!

excellent dish! though i did add some water as the sauce was looking very thick at one point and i used all the mozzarella, how can you not really! Next time I would add some muishrooms and maybe cook it all seperately and then combine it. definitely one i'm going to make again. and oh yeah i have no idea how this would feed 4, 3 tops but then i'm about to head back for a second helping :-)

Tried this tonight, simple and quick. I cooked the gnocchi separately and added to the sauce after it had thickened. Served 2 adults, a 2.5 and 1 year old with no leftovers - kids loved it! Nice with a green salad and crusty bread. Will definitely make again.

I didn't think that half the mozarella ball would be enough cheese but it was. This looks very homely and Italian when made.

This was delicious and very easy to make, though i found it only served two. Wold definately make again and maybe try adding some mushrooms or spinach to give more flavour.
