  • 100g light muscovado sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 100g dried cranberries, cherries or blueberries, or a mix

Method

  1. Heat oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Butter and line the base of a 18 x 25cm tin. Mix the oats, seeds and nuts in a roasting tin, then put in the oven for 5-10 mins to toast.

  2. Meanwhile, warm the butter, honey and sugar in a pan, stirring until butter is melted. Add the oat mix, cinnamon and dried fruit, then mix until all the oats are well coated. Tip into the tin, press down lightly, then bake for 30 mins. Cool in tin, then cut into 12 bars.

Really easy to make, and even better when you can adapt the ingredients so easily. Perfect for the lunchbox..and makes plenty too!

I too would leave out the cinnamon, but these have great potential. Mine turned out really crumbly and fell apart when I cut them after cooling - any tips?? Should I use all honey/no sugar? Also could I have made them too thin? Spread them into a normal tin.

Really nice recipe. Change the fruit, add dried strawberries, raisins, dried pineapple etc., anything goes as long as you don't change the wet ingredients to oats ratio. I added some coconut chips (ordered off the internet) but do watch them during the toasting process though as they burn easily. Also... toast the sesame seeds separately in a pan which gives them the characteristic nutty taste, they get lost in the mix otherwise and stay pale and sad!
Saiga... make sure you press the mix really firmly into the pan with the back of a spoon and that should stop the bars falling apart, overcooking can also make them brittle.

Made these for the first time with my 5 year old. Did half cranberry/half dried strawberry mix and used some pumpkin seeds in the seed mix. They're great - good taste with a lovely crunchy texture & have held together well (my big worry with lots of seeds etc!). Yum yum

Excellent recipe for an energy snack to have at work that stops me reaching for the cake and biscuits!
I did make one alteration, I love my chocolate, so I added 50g of dark chocolate crushed up and stirred it in to the warm mixture so it melted in. Absolutely made it for me!

These are lovely! I used a different variety of nuts and seeds but they are still delicious. I only baked mine for 25mins and I'm glad I did because they are nice and chewy :)

Just made these and they are lovely! a little sweet for me and next time I might leave the cinnamon out, I just wish I could see how to save this in my online binder! and can't find no guidelines to help, I have tried 'bookmark and share' but it doesnt seem to work.

I finally made these the other day but after peoples comments about the mixture being crumbly I decided to omit the honey, sugar and butter and instead used a small can of sweetened lite condensed milk. I also used half oats, half rice bubbles - The result was much lower in fat and sugar, chewy, crunchy, sticky and delicious! (They needed to bake a little bit longer and in a slower oven, but it was well worth it!) Would definitely recommend.

I haven't tried to make these yet but notice a few people mention their bars fall apart a little. One reason could be that you aren't packing the mixture densely enough into the tin. I find with all the granola bars I make its better to really squash it in. Either that or it could be to do with the oats you are using. The recipe states 'porridge oats', but if you are using wholegrain rolled oats rather than the oaties type the oats wont bind quite as well. Will give these a go and let you know how they pan out for me. :-)

Gorgeous - I varied ingredients quite a bit as fruit and nuts that needed using up. They were very tasty, good texture and kept for ages in a tin - love them!

Very tasty! I just happened to have a bag of muesli with fruit and nuts, so used that and added some frozen berries and raisins.

The only problem is that my bars don't seem to hold together very well. Does anyone have any sneaky tips? I don't know whether adding the frozen berries was a bad idea?
