  • 500g lean minced beef
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 2 x 400g cans chopped tomato
  • 1 tbsp Italian herbs
  • 400g gnocchi
  • 125g reduced-fat mozzarella
  • 400g spinach, washed

Method

  1. Fry the mince in the oil for a few mins. Tip in the tomatoes and herbs. Fill one of the empty cans with water, add this to the beef, then bring to the boil. Simmer for 20 mins.
  2. Tip half the spinach into a colander and pour over boiling water to wilt, then repeat with the second half. Squeeze out as much moisture from the spinach as you can, then leave to drain in the colander. When the beef is almost ready, cook the gnocchi, then drain. Heat the grill to high.
  3. Stir the gnocchi and spinach into the beef, season, then tip into a large ovenproof dish. Tear the mozzarella into chunks, scatter over, then grill until golden and bubbling.

I made this, adding herbs/mushrooms/garlic etc to spice up the bolognese, a slightly larger pack of mince and smaller pack of spinach (all the supermarket had). Myself, my toddler and husband had it over two nights - probably could have used slightly more to make four large sized portions but would be more than enough with some garlic bread on the side.

Very easy to make. Added chilli, garlic and Worcester sauce. Even my 4 year old step son enjoyed it.

Simples and yummy! Good comfort food. I added mushrooms, oregano, chilli flakes, onions and garlic. Just wish I had some garlic bread too... Didn't bother wilting the spinach, just pour on top of cooked mince and put a lid on to steam it. Making this again :)

Added garlic, onions and bacon as suggested, plus some tomato paste, and topped off with a sprinkling of oregano which worked a treat - very nice!

The first time I'd had gnocchi and it was actually very pleasant!!

I think the recipe needs a bit of tweaking and i'd agree with many of the other reviewers -

add 1/4 of the tomato tin of water to the sauce to losen it up a bit
add a couple of drops of worcestershire sauce (just 3 drops worked)
a pinch of sugar (to couteract the toato acidity)

Changes i'd make next time
-swap mozerella for cheddar (it was too stringy)
-add some veggies like courgette which would work really well

overall a good mostly store cupboard recipe and i'd make again!

Incidently i think serving 4 is ambitious, we got two adult portions and two small portions for lunches to take to work the next day.

this was nice enough, but like the other comments, I did jazz up my bolognese. Main problem with it though was that the gnocchi was a bit cold!

Tried this recipe tonight, it was a nice variation on the previous gnocchi bake recipe I've used. I did add some worcester sauce to give the bolognese some more flavour and think next time I will add garlic when browning the mince.

Used a carton of bolognese sauce and a tin of tomatos instead of two tins of tomatos, Left out some of the water and the spinach. Cooked in the oven for fifteen minutes,. Was a delicious supper dish which did four people plus left overs for one lunch. served with spring greens cooked separately.

This was delicious and very easy to make. However, I added red wine , lots of basil/ mixed herbs and onion as if not would have tasted quite bland. A bit of balsamic or beef stock would also be good alternatives to liven it up.

I cant understand why so many people are saying its bland, this is very typical proper everyday Italian food and I make it exactly as instructed with great ingredients and hey presto...Lovely. Only one small tip from living here in Italy is double or tripple the quantity of olive oil.

I added onions and garlic and a spash of dry white wine, was a lovely dinner. I'll be making it with meatballs next time rather than loose mince and I'd expect it to be a 5 star dish!

I also added garlic, onion, mushrooms, red wine and finely diced carrots which helped loads.
Tasted great.
If it's to sloppy or watery as some of you have said then keep reducing it down until it's not.
Will make again.

We cooked this tonight and even though we both enjoyed it we found it bland and a little watery. When we cook again we will add 1/2 the water and spinach (as we aren't keen on too much spinach) and add an onion and some garlic for some flavour. Adding pepper to the spinach would help with flavour too.

Good, but like everyone's said, it definitely needs some garlic and onion adding or it is a bit bland, though even as it is it makes a nice compliment to a good salad with dressing.

Would also suggest adding only half a can of water to begin with and seeing where that gets you- mine was a little runny even after grilling...

I added extras as it appears most other people did. I left out the extra water and used more spinach and mince than suggested. It wasn't as tasty as i was expecting but it was quick and easy to make and my kids loved it, even my fussy 4 year old ate it!!

Along with 90% of the other reviews, I added a few extras. Mushrooms, garlic, onion and worcester sauce. A easy, quick dish but you definitely need to add your own flavours to it.

I tried this because my strange kids love spinach. Tasteless, watery, bla, bla....
Others have tried to add/subtract ingredients. Isn't it time to replace this with a recipe that works??

made this last night and was excellent. made a few changes though: made the bolognese like i normally would with onions carrott mushrooms etc & left out the spinach. will be definitely make again
