Method

  1. Fry the mince in the oil for a few mins. Tip in the tomatoes and herbs. Fill one of the empty cans with water, add this to the beef, then bring to the boil. Simmer for 20 mins.
  2. Tip half the spinach into a colander and pour over boiling water to wilt, then repeat with the second half. Squeeze out as much moisture from the spinach as you can, then leave to drain in the colander. When the beef is almost ready, cook the gnocchi, then drain. Heat the grill to high.
  3. Stir the gnocchi and spinach into the beef, season, then tip into a large ovenproof dish. Tear the mozzarella into chunks, scatter over, then grill until golden and bubbling.

A great change from pasta bolognaise and the Kids loved it. The spinach was a really nice addition. I did add onion, garlic,a splash of red wine and a couple of mushrooms to the mince as it was VERY VERY bland without it. Definately will make again (with the changes) for an easy all in one family meal.

Also adapted the recipe to use a proper bolognese sauce (onions, bacon, garlic etc) as well as mince and tomatoes and it made a delicious change from spag bol - but wouldn't have been so tasty with just mince and tomatoes. Also, ingredients do not seem to list the spinach.

Tried this as the recipe suggested, but using 250g pack of fresh baby spinach. This really needed pepping up as it was very bland without onions, garlic etc. I don't understand why Good Food is giving recipes without basic ingredients to make the food taste good - am I on my own in thinking this?

I'm not the world's best cook, far from it in fact!! However this recipe was very simple to follow. I cooked the mince in the oven for an hour instead of on the hob (I prefer it that way, it tenderises the mince) before adding the spinach, gnocchi and cheese. Flavour was nice, but I do agree with the previous comments, it was on the bland side, and I found a bit watery. Would add some tomatoe paste and less tomatoes next time.

Tried the receipe and it was absolutely gorgeous (and filling!). I must admit that I adapted the bolognaise sauce by using my own recipe but would definitely try this again and again - it was lovely.

As with nearly everyone else who has commented, I didn't even attempt to make the sauce just using meat and tomatoes - and used my own recipe for the bolognese (actually Antonio Carluccio's recipe, which I think is THE best) - and so it was delicious. Would probably have been two stars at most with the bland recipe ingredients given.

Took on board all the comments and added, onion, mushrooms, tomato puree, garlic and didn't have bacon so used chorizo. Am also trying to lose weight so didn't use gnocchi just used all my spinach. I really enjoyed it.

this is gorgeous, a nice change from regular bolognase or lasagne. I made my normal bolognase sauce, onions, garlic, passata, worcestershire sauce, beef stock cube and italian herbs. i too, dont think it would of been as good with just the mince and tomatoes.
