  • 3 x 400g cans plum tomatoes
  • 500ml turkey or vegetable stock
  • 1 tsp sugar, any type, or more to taste

Method

  1. Heat the butter or oil in a large pan, then add the garlic and soften for a few mins over a low heat. Add the sun-dried or SunBlush tomatoes, canned tomatoes, stock, sugar and seasoning, then bring to a simmer. Let the soup bubble for 10 mins until the tomatoes have broken down a little.

  2. Whizz with a stick blender, adding half the pot of soured cream as you go. Taste and adjust the seasoning – add more sugar if you need to. Serve in bowls with 1 tbsp or so of the pesto swirled on top, a little more soured cream and scatter with basil leaves.

Despite using Napolina plum tomatoes, I found this reciepe very disappointing. For me, it did not taste much better than (or different to) Heinz tomato soup. The fresh basil, pesto, and soured cream helped, but I could have easily added these to a bought soup...

Yeah, this is pretty good! It looses a star because it isn't very nutritious! I prefer soups to be made with fresh ingredients but i'd be lying if I didn't say I enjoyed it!

Delish! I made this as a starter for today's lunch and I didn't believe that a couple of old tins of tomatoes could taste so good. I used chopped tomatoes as suggested by a previous reviewer and only 1 clove of garlic as the kids aren't too keen on it. I didn't have any sour cream so missed that out and I just added a dollop of single cream and mixed it in. Everybody ate every scrap so I will definitely be making this again.

A very easy soup to make. Had to add a few drops of tabasco and extra sugar/seasoning as felt it was lacking enough flavour.

Superb! Not keen on garlic so left it out which didn't spoil the recipe at all. Found it necessary to triple the amount of sugar. I thought I would have to sift out the pips but they were mashed by the blender and any remaining bits just added to the rustic 'homemadeness' of it. Really gorgeous.

Love it. My husband will only eat Heinz tomato soup and proclaimed this to be even better than that (mostly because it doesn't taste like the sauce their spaghetti comes in)

Lovely soup, added some home roasted tomatoes along with the sundried and tinned and used some greek yoghurt mixed with a little lemon juice and pesto to stir though at the end, my boyfriend and his friend ate a big bowl each so went down well!
