Method

  1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Grease a 2-litre/3½-pint ovenproof dish lightly with butter. Tip the flour, sugar and baking powder, along with a pinch of salt, into a large bowl. Mix together the milk, butter, egg and vanilla extract and stir into the dry ingredients until you get a smooth batter. Arrange the apples in the dish, spoon the batter on top and smooth with a knife until the apples are covered.

  2. For the topping, pour 250ml boiling water over the sugar and stir together until smooth. Pour the liquid over the pudding mixture, then scatter over the pecans. Bake for about 40 mins until the pudding has risen and is golden. Use a big spoon to serve the pudding, making sure you get some of the gooey caramel sauce covering the bottom of the dish. Serve with pouring cream, warm custard or vanilla ice cream.

Made this pud with apples from mum's tree and it was a massive hit. Everyone loved it from the elders to the little ones especially delish served with Kelly's Cornish ice cream. Definitely five stars and easy to boot. And to scoff.

An absolutely delicious pudding and really easy to make. I followed it to the letter, wouldn't change anything and will definitely be making it again and again. Great for using up the apples from our tree, but not so good for the waist line!!

I was EXTREMELY disappointed with this recipe. I'm quite an experienced cook so I wasn't expecting the result i had after reading the amazing reviews. I have been searching for a toffee/treacle pudding that has a gooey thick stodgy sauce or layer underneath as most of the ones I've seen haave a sauce which is quite liquid like. Thought I'd found it and have made this recipe 5 times in two days following the recipe to the tee. I love the sponge, however I was left with runny yellowy gunk with overcooked apples at the bottom and I don't classify this as toffee. I tried adding more sugar but all I got was the sugary sauce. A review said the sauce was stick, it was absolutely awful. Complete waste of ingredients

This recipe was really easy to make and tasted delicious. It took longer to cook than specifed in the method. Mine took about an hour but it was definitely worth the wait and it makes a great change to my usual repertoir of apple recipes!

I served this last Sunday after lunch and my son in law sneaked into the kitchen and scoffed what was left in the dish, a big success, don`t be scared about the amount of liquid it works out really well. Really really worth trying.

Delicious!!!! Also easy for dinner party as you can make most of it up ahead and just pour liquid on and bake when you're ready for it to go in. Yum yum

So naughty but oh so nice and moor-ish - be warned. It is what it says so if hot gooey treacley puds are your thing then this is for you. Def recommend.

Just made this for Saturday lunch with friends (4 adults, 4 kids) - loved by everyone and plenty for all (though no leftovers!) I used 3 bramley apples and I didn't think it was too sweet. Sponge still soft in the centre at the end of the cooking time so gave it an extra 10 mins.

I needed a quick winter pudding to take to a friends. This went down a treat and was fine after being warmed up an hour or 2 after having been made.
