A simple heartwarming stew with a touch of eastern spice

  • 2lb stewing steak
  • 1 onion
  • 3 carrots
  • 2 tbsp. curry powder
  • 1 litre water
  • 1 tbsp. bisto to thicken
  • 1tbsp. olive oil
  • 6 potatoes
  • Mango Chutney
  • Pickled onions
  • 3 cups long grain rice


    1. Finely chop the onions. Cut beef into cubes and slice the carrots.
    2. Heat the olive oil in a nonstick sauce pan. Fry the onion with the curry powder for 2 minutes until soft. Add in the beef and fry until brown.
    3. Add in the water and the carrots and bring to the boil and allow to simmer for 1 hour. Taste, season and add more curry powder as required.
    4. Thicken with bisto. Serve on a bed of rice with potatoes (optional) garnished with picked onions (optional)
