  • 50g dark chocolate


  1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Butter and line the base and sides of a 22cm square cake tin: cut 2 strips of baking parchment the width of the tin and longer than the base and sides, and fit into the tin each way and up the sides. This will make lifting it out easier.

  2. Mix together the flour, sugar and oats in a bowl. Add the egg, melted butter and cherries, and mix well. Tip into the tin and spread evenly with a fork.

  3. Bake for 20-25 mins until golden brown. Cool in the tin for 10 mins, then carefully lift out using the paper and place on a board. Mark, but don’t cut, 4 lines each way to make 16 squares. Melt the chocolate in the microwave for 1 min, then drizzle over the squares. When the chocolate has set, cut the squares down the marked lines.

Brilliant result! Very easy to make. Would maybe put in a bit less sugar next time as very sweet. Maybe more oats and less sugar to make it a bit more wholesome! Otherwise perfect will make again

Really tasty alternative to flapjacks. Held together really well. Quite sweet with the glacé cherries so might try dried cranberries next time. Will definitely make again.

Very good recipe - dead easy to make and tasty. Needs something else to give them the 'x factor' though - maybe some more fruit or extra chocolate on top? I think I will drizzle a mix of white and milk chocolate over the top next time, and add more cherries.

Really nice, held together better than flapjacks. Also reduced sugar by 25g and doubled chocolate on top instead. Feel they would be really easy to vary as well.

I had all the ingredients except for the cherries so I used dried cherries and added a big handful of flaked almonds - it all tasted much better and much lighter than I expected.

Quick and simple, recipe with nice results - I took others' advice and doubled the chocolate quantity so it was enough to cover the flapjacks rather than drizzle and it worked out well.

Delicious - my go-to treat recipe. But I do double the chocolate and cover the flapjacks in a chocolate layer ... yum!!

I don't like glace cherries so substituted 150g of dried cranberries and also popped in some chopped white chocolate. Marking out the squares makes it much easier to cut after drizzling with the chocolate. Couldn't wait until they'd gone completely cold and cut off a corner to try. Really yummy. Think these will go down a treat with grandchildren at the bonfire tonight. This recipe is going straight into my 'must do again' folder!

these are great for lunchboxes. I make a couple of changes to make them a little more healthy. I do 1/2 self raising flour and 1/2 wholemeal flour. Add a scoop of protein powder and a scoop of ground flax seed (linseed). I replace the cherries with cranberries, raisins, walnuts ..whatever you have in the cupboard. You can also reduce the sugar as I find they are very sweet. Perfect high energy, slow release snacks for little ones ....

Made these for a work meeting. Very popular! A little like a flapjack, a bit like a biscuit, and even a touch of sponginess. Nice! Found the quantity of cherries stated to be just right. Would recommend using a very dark chocolate for the drizzle.

super easy to make but I felt they were a bit dry and not most flavoursome recipe.
Perhaps a drizzel of orange juice or some sultanas would make a good addition.

Wasn't looking for this sort of recipe at the time but came across this one and as I love oats I tried it. The squares were delicious and were soon eaten up. My daughters boyfriend said they were the nicest cakes he'd ever had! I made them a second time a few days later and can't wait to make them again.

I wasn't as bowled over as some people by these. I used stated amount of cherries and added dark chocolate chips to the mixture. Pleasant enough but very sweet even though I cut 25g off the sugar. Won't be rushing to make these again, plenty of other recipes to try.

Really nice and so easy. I found the amount of cherries enough. Can even skip the chocolate to make them even quicker although they do look much better with the drizzle of chocolate.

These were really easy to make, and delicious. They do not crumble and fall apart like other flapjacks I have tried to make. I also added some extra cherries to the mix.

Lovely recipe, worked perfectly first time! Made them last night and then decorated them with the chocolate this morning. Used a homemade icing bag made from greaseproof paper to drizzle the chocolate, which worked a treat! Also, used double the amount of cherries like several other people suggested, and that worked beautifully. Definitely will be making again!
