What's the story behind 1800 Silver tequila?

In 1758, when he was granted a plot of land in Mexico by King Ferdinand VI of Spain, Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo can’t have imagined what lay ahead for himself and his descendants. The Don cultivated the agave plant after the Spanish decided against bringing it back with them to Europe. It wasn’t until 1795 that permission was granted for the family to begin selling tequila commercially, making them the first in the world to do so.

Fast forward to 2021 and Jose Cuervo’s descendants are some of the richest people in Mexico – Jose Francisco Beckmann, the 11th generation of the family to run the Jose Cuervo business, is the fourth richest person in the country.

The 1800 tequila brand is all about paying tribute to tradition. The year 1800 is widely accepted as the year tequila was first successfully aged in wood barrels. As such, this range was launched with a strict adherence to the original recipe and processes. Even the distinctive trapezoid bottle has been designed to reflect the stones of the iconic Mayan pyramids. The logo features a Mayan pyramid at the top, and the initials JB pay tribute to founder Juan Domingo Beckmann.

What does 1800 Silver tequila taste like?

Made with 100 per cent agave, 1800 is an ultra-smooth option. The nose is light and floral with agave at the fore. The palate is uncomplicated – just packed with delectably smooth agave and subtle citrus flavours.

Don’t overpower the subtleties of this tequila. Try it in a refreshing la rita cocktail: into an iced cocktail shaker, pour 60ml 1800 Silver tequila, 30ml lime juice and 15ml each agave syrup and orange juice. Shake well and strain into a tumbler with a few large ice cubes, then garnish with a lime wedge.
