  1. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Peel, core and thinly slice the apples and mix with the jam and orange juice. Spread evenly over a buttered 1.5-litre ovenproof dish, not too deep.

  2. Mix the oats, flour and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add the butter in small chunks and rub in gently. Stir in the sugar and rub in again. Drizzle over the syrup, mixing with a knife so it forms small clumps. Sprinkle evenly over the apples and bake for 30-35 mins until the juices from the apples start to bubble up. Cool for 10 mins, then serve with custard, cream or ice cream.

If you double the crumble recipe and use bramleys instead of Cox' (Cox' make the recipe too sweet), this recipe really works.

This was an excellent crumble although I tweaked it a bit. I used 3 large Bramley apples and 4 Cox's. I didn't have apricot jam so sprinkled some caster sugar on the fruit after I added the orange juice. I doubled up the crumble topping as I wanted the fruit to be well covered but I didn't double the sugar. There is no need to double it as the golden syrup adds extra sweetness.

My sister made this today for after Sunday lunch. Absolutely gorgeous. Really was something more than the usual crumble. Amazed how well eating apples worked. Will be making soon.

love the topping on this! i used bramleys as I had a whole pile to use up and i dribbled a little fruit syrup over and didn't bother with the orange juice or jam. i also halved the sugar in the crumble and it was plenty sweet enough. will be making again this weekend! :)

Lovely recipe but the eating apples did not break down enough for my liking - bramleys are better (or a cooking apple generally) if you´re looking for a softer apple base. I used about 60% of the apple weight suggested and the crumble was still a bit sparse - be generous with the quantities when weighing the topping ingredients.

Not bad. The topping is delicious but the apples remained with a bit too much bite. I'd be tempted to put them in on their own for 10 mins before adding the crumble and baking off next time.

Simple and quick to make, this was very nice indeed and everyone had second helpings! I didn't have any fresh oranges so just used some orange juice from a carton and threw in half a punnet of raspberries that I had in the fridge. I also used runny honey instead of golden syrup. I will try with fresh orange and syrup next time.

This was a change from a normal crumble and was ok but I wouldn't make it again. There were 7 of us and everyone said they preferred a traditional crumble.

Mage this for the first time today. Used damson jam oj and added some ground almonds. It was delicious! Went beautifully with creme fraiche, custard and ice cream too (not all at once!)

Used variety of apples - Braeburn, Cox, Golden Delicious and Bramley and then just did what the recipe said (with soya marg instead of butter so it was dairy free). The result is delicious, a lovely twist on the old apple crumble favourite.

I added black cherry jam and some tropical fruit juice to the apples and used Raymond Blanc's recipe for the crumble and it was delicious!

Lovely recipe, liked that you don't put sugar in with the apples, we've enjoyed it cold for a few days after too, makes loads!

This recipe churned out a little too much apple mixture (though, curiously, just the right amount of crumble) so next time I won't make quite so much. I replaced the butter with coconut oil to keep it vegan-friendly which worked very well. This is criminally sweet (particularly since we had it with a scoop of vanilla Swedish Glace) but that's how we like our puds! Someone with less of a sweet tooth might want to reduce the jam or sugar, or possibly use tart cooking apples instead of eaters.

All in all, this went down exceptionally well here and will probably end up being my go-to crumble recipe!

Delicious! I halved the sugar amount in the crumble the second time, as it didn't really need so much.

Followed the recipe exactly but found the ratio of fruit to crumble was too heavy on the crumble side, and didn't experience the 'flapjack' experience. Will stick to my usual recipe next time.
